We took an excursion for the "Your Way" transfer to Athens. Because the port is Piraeus, if you get off the ship you're still an easy 30-45 minute drive to Athens. Doing the transfer was unbelievably worth it. We had a guide who basically gave us the bus tour on the drive in pointing out sights to see such as buildings from the last Olympics in Greece. Then when we got to Athens, she lead us up past the Acropolis Museum and gave us a few tips on how to explore the Acropolis and how to get to Plaka which is the marketplace district of Athens. My advice based on our experience if you do this is to go to the Acropolis first as the line will fill up early. The excursion dropped us off early enough that we nearly walked right up to the Parthenon. I'd also say you should get the pass that allows you access to all the historical sites such as the Agora, the Roman Agore, Hadrian's Library, etc. as it's only 10 euros more than the price of just the Acropolis. It's a flimsy piece of receipt paper that you use as entrance to all of these, so be careful and make sure you still go to the ticket booths at all of the sites otherwise they will accuse you of trying to skip the entry fee even though you have already paid for it.

Athens is a huge old city, not that impressive. We walked a distance from the landing dock, in search of a Hop-On/Off bus, but we were approached by a taxi driver who took us on a private tour. Because of our age (72 & 75) and my husband's bad knee, we enjoyed the drive. He knew smaller side streets and photo stops so as to avoid the backed-up traffic. He took us to a coffee shop at the foot of the Acropolis so we have great photos. But again, it was too crowded and rocky to suit us so we were perfectly content.

I did it excursion through TripAdvisor and it was interesting seeing the Parthenon and the other sites. I suggest you get a Hop on Hop off bus it takes you wherever you want to go and you don't have to travel in a big group and wait for everybody else.

As we had been to Athens previously, we escaped the crowds and took a ship excursion to Ancient Corinth and the Corinth Canal. It was a long drive (approx 1.5 hours each way), but was worth it for the history and to see this feat of engineering.
