The itinerary didn’t allow for time in Rome, so we booked a hotel for a few nights after the cruise. I definitely recommend spending as long as your budget will allow! Rome is gorgeous!

We had an excellent time because we booked a car. There was chaos for those that did not. Not enough shuttles to the port. There was pushing, scuffles and one of the guest let me know it took him 2 hours just to get to the terminal. Some passengers missed the boat as Rome is 1.5 hours away.

We arrived a week early and went on guided and self organized tours. On our other ports our focus is the guided tours offered by Celebrity but for Civitavecchia itself, nearby Ostia Antiqua, and the tourist friendly, historically interesting, and beautiful nearby Rome makes this port a repeat bucket list destination.

Did 4.5 hour tour to Vatican (through Dark Rome), which included the “staircase”. Rosy was our guide and was amazing. Saw Borghese gallery (reservation required) in the afternoon. A fantastic place, but shouldn’t do it the same day as the Vatican (overwhelmed by too much art in one day). Hotel was (Sina Belini), where we could walk to Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Spanish Steps and Borghese - all amazing sights. Did a 6 hour trip (on our own) to Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill. Happy to be able to wander around at our own pace (used Rick Steves audio tour). Bought the 72-hour Roma pass, which was well worth it.
