We caught a free shuttle bus to the hill top walled town of Tarquinia. It was a fantastic day. Lots of interesting things, great coffee & food. Very few tourists as most people want to go to Rome. Check with the tourist information at the dock.

Didn't visit Rome as we took a private tour there last year. Instead we walked around Civitavecchia and spent some time on the beach (pebbley so take water shoes) finishing with fantastic antipasti in a local bar. Worth a visit if you've done Rome a few times.

We spent a week in Rome before the cruise. We saw the ship excursions to Rome for the day. After spending a week there, we wondered what you would see. It takes about 50-60 minutes to get there by train. I would imagine the tours hustle you along considering the ship leaves late afternoon. But Rome is amazing.
