I feel three days was a sufficient amount to see all the main sites, but that is keeping busy all day long. Amazing food and stunning architecture with history that boggles the mind.

For my first Mediterranean cruise I started at this port. I didn’t realise transfers weren’t included in my package so ended up taking the train to the port. It’s about an hour journey for Rome Termini but I found this to be a complete hassle. We took a taxi to the train station but there wasn’t any trollies to help ferry my luggage to the platform and the platform is right at the end of the station. It must have taken 15 or 20 minutes to walk to the other end of the station. Then when we got to the Civitavecchia we had to get a shared taxi to the port and then a bus inside the port. It was just a complete hassle. However the next time that I went to Civitavecchia my departing port was Barcelona and I was just spending a day in Rome. Such a complete turn around as this port is alright. Partly as I knew what to expect and partly because I didn’t have any luggage, but navigating this journey as a day trip in to Rome was fun. I also got back early so that I had time to explore the town. I ended up on the beachfront at sunset and then had a lovely walk along to coast back to the ship. Sometimes first impression isn’t always the best thing to go on. Although I would be hard pushed to depart out of Rome again.

Save your money and take the train. The station is within walking distance and takes you half the time to get there. Do your homework with directions before you leave. The MSC staff were not open about giving any type of help that took money out of their pockets.
