Rainy didn’t help, but Heraklion is a dense populated city and the port is not well suited for cruises. The hop on bus was 15 euros and the audio guide was informative. Did not enter Krossos, but likely that and the museum will be the best sites.

Took a taxi from port to a beach nearby, 18 euro but you can catch a bus in to town then the number 21 for a couple of euros, pleasant beach, lots of locals and a small bar on side for drinks and snacks

We did the long tour to the Knossos Palace. It was well worth it. Drive there and back was not bad. After the palace we had a dinner show which we really were not expecting and it was great.

Our trip to the Palace of Knossos was wonderful. The trip was a little on the long side, but worth the drive. The provided meal was great. Our guide was knowledgeable, but did tend to keep us standing in one place for quite some time while she explained things. I think her pacing could have been better. You could tell members of our group were getting restless.

The description of the walk at the botanical gardens was insufficient and should have explained walking on dirt gravel and rocks. It did say wear comfortable shoes it did not give the right info of why. We had to turn back because shoes were comfortable but not for going up and down gravel dirt paths without risking a fall

On Sunday the Greek (Crete?) government moved Labor Day from Sunday May 1, to Monday May 2 (the day we were in port), closing the Palace of Knossos which had been the primary reason for choosing this particular cruise. The internet sign up for the excursion simply said "sold out" so I booked a private tour thru ToursbyLocals.com. Seems like there could have been more explanation like "possibly not available". BTW the private tour company is refunding my payment, and we did do a short walk around the charming port.
