Loved this city, which is very manageable. It's cleaner than any other city we visited, lots of restoration taking place, easy to shop on main squares or go to cafes. Music performances by local music students were excellent.

I took the included Cienfuegos tour. It was excellent. I also took the $299 trip to Havana. The bus was nice. The tour guide was knowledgeable and open in his comments. The trip was very rushed. Very little time to explore independently. We had a surprise ride in vintage American cars. After 12 hours, all arrived back to the ship exhausted.

Did the overnight to Havana. Highly recommend this if you're going to spend any time in Cuba. The hotel was very nice, an embarrassment of riches compared to the rest of our journey. Had a lovely view overlooking the ocean. Breakfast buffet was outstanding. Cold War history tour was a disappointment -- small museum consisting mostly of photographs and some old military hardware outside, not much of a narrative by our guide inside. I doubt that we got much of an accurate picture.

For what it is, Cienfuegos was nice. It is what I would call a "rural" city. People still use horse & buggy as transportation. Yes, it's a poor area with many old, run-down buildings. Once we got out of the city and into the countryside to visit El Nicho waterfall, we really enjoyed the scenery.
