The port is desolate. It did not look inviting or safe to get off by myself. You defintely need an excursion if you get off the ship.

Nothing to do in town, either stay on ship or go on excursion . We did the Catalina Island excursion. It was great. The boys on the island were charging people for the lawn chairs even though they were free!
