The port area is well put together but what do you expect I guess if you use a carnival or a big name Excursion company it'll probably be better I hired a private taxi so it was $30 a person took us on a tour of the city went by the rum Factory was $4 he was asking about the Chocolate Factory but the problem was he spoke limited English and I spoke a limited Spanish so needless to say he was not a great tour guide, wanted him to take me by the orphanage he acted like he didn't understand what I said so I broke the words down in Spanish and he still didn't get it so I just said forget it as far as shopping other than buying at the rum Factory I didn't spend any money until I got back to the port and I didn't buy much there my son bought some snorkel kit for $20 we would normally Buy in our stores for maybe five or six dollars the little coin purses that I get in the Bahamas for like a dollar they were 5 to $8 so I don't know I guess it's to each his own butt it would be a port that I would skip this whole Carnival Sensation 5-day trip I would skip it unless I was just broke and it planned on doing nothing but staying at the ports

Would have preferred to dock at a part of this island that was not just a tourist trap, but a part of idkand that also A relected the culture of the people.

The cruise port, Amber Cove, is lovely. New and spotless ...a Disney sort of "town". We took a "panoramic" side trip into Puerto Plata - a staggering contrast. Educational (!) but would not do it again as a vacation option.
