Cozumel, Mexico Port Q&A

Cozumel is a self-contained tourist island. Zero concerns. Mexico is safer than the vast majority of US urban areas, just stay aware of your surroundings. Of all cruise ports, Cozumel is as safe as it gets.

It’s not like the movies Mexico is very safe I have been several times even spending a few weeks in Cancun never had any problem I would go to Cozumel before I would go to Detroit , Philadelphia or St. Louis

Cozumel is extremely safe. We have been there on 9 Cruises and we were there in March for a week. Wonderful people there.

I just spent a week in Cozumel for Thanksgiving. Never once did I feel unsafe or at edge. It's a beautiful island with very nice people.

Our excursion thru the ship was canceled due to a lack of participation, so we changed it to Tulum. It was one of the best tours we have done. We were late getting back to ship due to issues with the ferry. Still want to go but may do it outside of a cruise. I have little safety concerns with Cozumel.

My husband and I have been to Cozumel several times and I have never felt unsafe. We’ve walked from the NCL port down to where carnival and RC dock and never once felt unsafe. We’ve been to Chichenitza and Kohunlich and Dzibanche and again, have never felt unsafe! You should be fine, but if you’re worried, I’d book direct with the cruise line. That being said, people in Cozumel thrive off the tourism that comes through, so booking with a company from the island supports the island inhabitants more than booking through the cruise line.

like maryred said, the tours from Cozumel go to Tulum ruins! I also would not go to the ruins unless I was on a ships tour, they are to far away to risk not getting back in time.

No issues! Long travel time but clean bus and safe road/driving. Went in Dec 2022. Just travel with intelligence.

I personally wouldn’t do that on a Cozumel day. If you do it, book through the cruise line. Normally- I would advise otherwise as we often go “on our own”. But what you’re trying to accomplish is a very long day that requires many cogs to fall into place perfectly to get done and back to the ship. We love Cozumel- we wouldn’t skip it to see ruins. We did visit ruins once while in belize.

It's a long trip. Far too long to do outside the cruise line, but if they offer a tour and you don't think you will be back in Mexico anytime soon, do it.Chichen Itza is one of the best things I've ever seen, but I did it on my own from Cancun

I would only book through the cruise line. You will be with other cruisers and the ship will wait for you. You will enjoy the trip. I only regret not buying a jaguar head souvenir.

Chichen Itza is at least 5.5 hours away from Cozumel between the ferry to the mainland and driving. Very few cruises even offer an excursion there because of the distance. But there are private by air tours between the island and that particular ruin that cut the travel time to 2/5 of the water and land crossing but multiply the price 7 fold.

If you are referring to the ruins at Tulum, an excursion almost all cruises porting at Cozumel offer, that us still a long ferry ride (45 minutes) to the mainland, and about another 2 hours by road. Most tours to make it back to the ship on time stay at the ruin only 90 minutes to 2 hours.

you'll be just fine but be aware that chichen itza is wall to wall vendors. we didn't know this going in. it's a beautiful and magical place but they were distracting. enjoy!

I've been to many different countries and ports. I have been to Cozumel 5 times and never felt the slightest bit unsafe. People say a lot of bad stuff about Mexico , but Cozumel is definitely a safe port.

Mexico is pretty darn safe. The only port in Mexico I ever felt was a big sketchy was Ensenada. Western Caribbean ports are all very tourist driven economies and they understand that it’s their lifeblood.
