A seemingly poor and very mountainous island with little in the way of beaches. We did a several hour tour with Lybo's Tours off the dock gong to Emerald Pool (OK but a decent walk to a very rocky area in a gorge with a pool and small waterfall feeding it - very crowded) Mr Nice fruit stand (excellect showman) Botanical Garden (a real stretch - think small Park). The tour was well delivered though and worth the $25 we paid. The people are obviously proud of their island.

We did the 4 hour River Tubing & Rainforest Drive. Unfortunately, it was the beginning of the dry season and the water levels were very low. We felt that the excursion should have been cancelled, but also understand the economic impact of doing so would have been tremendous. Our guides were great and worked very hard pulling and pushing us through the still water areas, and pulling us off of the rocks and bank areas where we often got hung up. The rapids were few and the low water level caused us to have to pull up our butts in order not to get injured on the rocks that were constantly brushing the bottom of our tubes. Thankfully the tubes had enclosed bottoms so there was a little buffer between the rocks and our bathing suits. A big complaint is that, although they told us to bring a change of clothing with us, there was nowhere to change, and no bathroom facilities at the end point. Several spouses held up towels for their mates to allow them to change into dry clothing before the rainforest drive part of the tour. I pressed the driver about a bathroom, and he agreed to stop back at the starting point to allow us to use that bathroom.

Our tour that day was pretty lame. The bus had 4 small windows and no air conditioning with about 20 people. The tour guide was'nt very informative or polite. The sites were mostly unimpressive too. Most of the native people were indifferent or unwelcoming as well. Still the landscape was impressive and I saw some really nice beaches on the tour. We went to a waterfall in the rainforest for a swim. That was really nice.

You have to take a private tour and see the whole island.

The only island we visited that still has a significant population of its original indigenous Kalingo people, who have managed to retain much of their own culture - so very interesting. Again, we had another great guide. Also, great snorkeling, especially at Champagne reef.
