Everything is closed there on Sunday. Beaches suck.

We walked to the fort in town. Nice. We were looking to snorkel but excursions were full. Perhaps next time.

We had a great tour of the north of the island. The tour was just long enough and the tour guide made us all feel at home. Fort-de-France itself looked like it had endured decades of neglect, but it was still fun to peruse French bookstores and buy fresh pain au chocolat.

Very nice port. Very clean. We hired a taxi and took a short two hour tour of historic sites and parts of rain forest. Very nice taxi driver.

French governed island, did island tour which was poor. Taken to a church where a funeral was taking place. A waterfall that isn’t worth looking at and a river? Had time at a volcanic beach which was horrible. Glad to get back to the ship.

We had high expectations of this historic island. After all, it was the site of the Mt. Pelee vulcanic explosion in 1902, which killed more than 20,000 people. It also was the birthplace of Napoleon's mistress and wife, Josephine. Her statue in the park in Fort-de-France was vandalized some years ago - the head was knocked off - and I realized why this was done. Napoleon introduced some progressive reforms, but he also restricted the rights of women in France, and reintroduced slavery in the West Indies. We found the capital seedy and vaguely threatening, reminiscent of an old Graham Greene novel. We were cheated out of the few purchases we made - and our friends encountered the same treatment - and we were glad to be back on the Maasdam after a few hours in this unwelcoming little town.

Love the layout of the city, but I was harassed a lot by locals (I don’t recommend going alone as a young white female). I did not do an excursion, but I wish I had.
