Definitely do an excursion for this port! We didn’t, and it was rough. We got pretty heavily harassed by vendors right away and it was very overwhelming. A man asked if we wanted to take pictures with a monkey. We had said no thank you, but then he went ahead and put the monkey on my shoulder. My husband took some pictures and we gave the guy $10. It was cute, but it was just that feeling of harassment. We went back to the ship soon after that. Anything fun to do, you’d have to take a taxi, and we felt too nervous to do that. If we go to this port again, we’ll definitely book an excursion!

Another beautiful island. The monkeys are adorable. The people bombarding you the moment you step off the boat gets pretty annoying. I understand they have to make money but this island was the worst as far as that kind of stuff goes. They wouldn’t accept “No, thank you” as an answer either. I might actually consider skipping this port in the future if I were to cruise there again because it was so bad.

So... we didn't book an excursion for St. Kitts. We walked into town and rented a car. We even had to get a drivers license for the day so we could drive on the other side of the road. We didn't have a grand plan we just started driving. After getting lost for a little while (they could do with some street signs in Bassterre!) we found the outter drive and the views are spectacular! The first stop was Romney Manor. We didn't know what to expect and it blew us away. The Caribelle Bastic store was really interesting and we picked up several items that we will cherish. A short drive from Romney Manor is the Brimstone Fortress. We took hundreds of pictures and spent hours walking thru the ruines. Everyone agreed we will need to take a trip back and spend more time on St. Kitts.

The locals exploiting monkeys and throwing them on people who didn't even want the monkeys on them was a huge turnoff. The island was nice, I took a tour from a provider on land and he was great-got to meet his family, he provided us with lots of extras on the tour. But those monkey photo vendors totally turned me off of the island. I explored the area on foot and talked to many residents who were all very nice and accommodating-this is the biggest saving grace to offset the monkey photo vendors.

Do NOT book the train trip. It was really bad. It was billed as a 3 hour train ride, however, the first 45 minutes were on a bus. We didn't pay $99 to see where the bank president lived, the local chicken stop, bakery, gas station or car dealers were located. The train ride went through a lot of towns and villages, which it was so lovely to see their garbage- literally. Yes, "scenic" is subjective, however, garbage/trash is just that no matter what country you are traveling through on vacation. Oh, after the train ride, the fee to use the pubic restrooms at the dock were $1.00 per person so use the bathroom on the train - if you can find it. On a positive note, after our written complaint, we were issued a 50% refund.
