Whale watching was phenomenal! Definitely a must see. The glacier views are equally worth while. Tons of photo opportunities, and the locals are very welcoming.

The gold panning was fun experience. It was amazing that the gold stays in the pan even if you hold the pan upside down. The helicopter ride to the glacier and being able to walk on the glacier was one of the highlights of the trip. It was an unreal experience. Totally worth the time and dollars to do.

Look for 'locally' or 'Alaskan' made symbols when shopping. Otherwise everything was made in Chine sold by foreigners there for the summer season. The Tram up the mountain was fun, but eat lunch before you go! The restaurant at the top NOT worth it! (we got 3 'fish stick' sized pieces of halibut with fries and coleslaw for $22).

Typical little big city atmosphere. Check out Mt Roberts tramway. Make reservations for the restaurant at the top if you don't want to wait in line. Mid day (lunch time) is best for Mt Roberts tramway so might as well eat lunch there. Make sure you go to Mendenhall Glacier. Also, free buses in town and small charge to go out to the Indian village. Downtown 'locals' area a bit sketchy but no more than any other city.
