Love Homer. The spit is close to the pier, which is itself just covered with nesting Kittiwakes. Short free shuttle to the spit shopping/restaurant area. There is a large walkable beach with more spectacular scenery. Did not do an excursion, but there were great ones available; would have liked to do the kayaking excursion. On sail-our toward Anchorage, could clearly see both volcanoes Mt. Rodoubt and Mt. Spurr, which was puffing fumes.

The first part of the day was overcast, and visibility was fair. There was trouble docking, and we were delayed leaving the ship by an hour. That said, all of the tours adjusted their schedules to accommodate the delay. We took the Homer Highlights tour and started by visiting the Pratt Museum which is a neat science and natural history museum of the Homer area. We then traveled to the Norman Lowell Gallery, and had the opportunity to meet with the artist himself. Wonderful experience, and absolutely beautiful artwork. We were supposed to do some sightseeing after this, but Mother Nature brought a fair amount of rain to Homer, (no surprise as we visited during the Alaska rainy season) and visibility disappeared. Our last stop was the Islands & Ocean Visitor Center. This is the visitor center for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge which encompasses the Aleutian Islands, and the waters surrounding the Kenia peninsula. There are lots of shops and restaurants along the Homer Spit. There are shuttles that run along the Spit, but it should be mentioned that the spit is FIVE MILES long and cruise ships dock out near the end. I am planning on going back during a less rainy time of the year as I have heard and seen pictures of the beautiful Kachemak Bay area.

This port has a little bit of something for everyone, take the bus into town and visit each stop it makes. Go to the library or book store and pick up a mystery book! There are great little restaurants around the point as well.

we found out the ship doesn't have a laundry room and there service was costly, so went into town for underwear. Got back in time for shuttle bus to the Spit for lunch. Had halibut kabobs with fries couldn't finish fries but the fish was great.
