Our friends were supposed to book Bermuda on NCL for the same week we are traveling. However, there is a serious medical issue on his side of the family. She just had her own serious battle and really needs some time off, and she doesn’t need to face whatever is going on with his family. Believe me, it’s a horror story. So, she has traveled with us before, and we offered the bunk in our cabin. I inquired with our TA about putting a third person in the cabin . Here is what I learned: third, and presumably fourth, passengers in a cabin, are only allowed as long as there is still vacancy in the lifeboat assigned to you cabin. So basically, if you want to add someone late, if the lifeboat capacity is full, you can’t add the extra party. Better to add them early, and if they have to be removed, they can. Well, they can always show the 5 yr old how much fun it can be to scrape barnacles off the hull.
Disney Cruise Line also limits capacity by their children’s program. Only so many are allowed for each age group, and if the kid’s club is full for that age the child can’t be booked on the cruise. You can actually be booking the cruise and find out your 10 year old can go but your 5 year old can’t!
Oh wait, we are on in April. I missed the September part. We’ll be on the Gem in October for my birthday.
Aaargh! We’re on the 22-29. Our anniversary is on the 24th.

I do know ships capacity is calculated based on double occupancy.. then there is full capacity. When a ship is “sold out” it implies all the cabins are sold. But real manifest could be anywhere from double occ. to total. I always assumed the lifeboats accounted for total capacity. So if a muster station covered let’s say.......80 cabins, the boat should have enough room and supplies for 280 passengers. 160 ( for the double occ ) plus another 120 for all the cabins that sleep 3 or 4. Those numbers are just an example. Larger ships have larger and more lifeboats.
I wonder if the people in NCL’s Haven get escorted to their own designated lifeboat by their butler ?
Now that is something I never would have thought of, however I have wondered how capacity works when numbers per cabin can vary. Ships are listed with a certain passenger capacity but I never knew how that was calculated. This actually makes sense and answers questions that have tickeled the back of my grey cells for a while.
