What are Your thoughts about Sickness At Sea from veteran cruisers?

As many of you may have heard this weekend the NCL Dawn was refused debarking on the island of Mauritius. It appears there was some stomach illness onboard and out of an abundance of caution they wanted to test the passengers before debarking. Apparently Cholera is a rapidly spreading disease in the African Nations and out of an abundance of caution they are making sure not to allow this virus to spread.

We all hear from non crusiers who constantly act like crusie ships are Petri Dishes etc...

i personally do not feel that cruisers are somehow more likely to get sick except the facts that we cannot refute and that is sharing a space with thousands of other people for many days?

i would like to know how you seasoned cruisers feel about these challenges?

Hopefully more folks will chime in here. Good subject!

I agree with Yankee47! We cruise anyway, sometimes we catch the "cruise crud" (usually when there are a lot of children on the ship) and sometimes we don 't. When we do other vacations (yes we do things other than cruise), we often come home with the "whatever crud". When cruising started up during the Covid situation, people didn't follow the guidelines because (whatever excuse) they didn't want to. Even going to the local shopping mall, we use hand sanitizer if we go to the food court and once we're back in the car then wash our hands once we're home. Sometimes we still catch whatever is going around. The only way to not catch something on a cruise is: to not cruise. During the holidays we had several invitations, all of which we declined because of all the toddlers attending. We wanted to be healthy as we could be for our NYE cruise. I was in the casino and there was a fellow caughing (could have been anything), I got up amd moved across the room. Bottom line: you must be responsible for your ownself; you can't make others do what you think is necessary to stay healthy; cruising for us is worth the risk; flying is worth the risk; working with the public (our Summer gig) is worth the risk; decide for yourself if it's worth the risk.

Update on the NCL ship the Dawn today Feb 26, 2024. Mauritius tested around 15 passengers and determined it was not Cholera and cleared the passengers to disembark and the next passengers to embark. NCL has offered hotel vouchers to all affected and airline vouchers including future cruise credits to all that had to incur extra expenses due to this delay. This is great publicity on NCL's part to do whatever they can to help the passengers affected by this 2 day delay. I hope that being upfront about the situation rather than trying to keep it silent is the future standard procedures.

On another note i want to suggest that the Cruise Lines have a mandatory video just like the evacuation videos we have to watch and acknowledge. My video would be one related to Germs and Simple things we all can do to prevent these Germs from speading. I know many of you and i have seen plenty of people in the buffet lines not cleaning there hands before returning to get more food and spreading there germs on the serving spoons we all touch. Also people who have colds coughing and not using known ways to prevent the spead, including isolating yourself, using cough drops or wearing a mask. I understand everyones freedoms, but i also know that most of us would not appreciate a sick person spreading it so we all should consider isolating ourselves should we get sick and using known ways to limit food borne illnesses. I hope this can start some discussions to create a more pleasant cruise for everyone more often. I realize we cannot stop 100% of germs but i think we have learned somethings since Covid and we all want a fun Vacation with Adventure and free from sickness. See you at Sea!!

We go anyway. Your OP explains it very well...non-cruisers indeed...its like non-combat "veterans" explaining it all when they've never heard a shot fired, let alone at them...got everything they need to know from movies, bar discussions, etc..(I have a different definition of the term "veteran", but I digress as usual.) To compound the problem, the cruise lines have a reputation of being somewhat less than forthcoming when it comes to these "incidents"..they just have a harder time spinning them, since everyone has a cell and is on social media...not necessarily a bad thing....sometimes....of course, we won't discuss being stuck in an airplane or train, or any other form of public transportation, or theatre, or overcrowded terminal or waiting room... Generally speaking, nobody seems to pay much attention to Covid, or the Flu anymore, no matter the numbers, which seem to be getting uglier...Its unlikely most Americans can spell "cholera"....can't blame Mauritius in the slightest....we started cruising again ASAP "after" Covid...matter of personal choice. wore masks, then stopped. Wife says my bad attitude scares away the bugs...hehehehe
