Unsupervised children

I have been reading lots of forums on line and the subject of unsupervised children has come up. This concerns because I am a parent and grandparent and I am shocked that anyone would allow little ones to run around by themselves in an environment like massive ship with thousands of strangers on it. Apparently they get in the adult hot tub and pool area, and there are no parents watching them. I know it is not the norm, but if it happens at all it is a safety and liability issue for the cruise lines as well as annoyance for other passengers who paid to have fun also. I would like to hear what anyone else has experienced.

Always a concern. Will not hear from the parents till something happens to their child. Sad but true.

Wife and I have little tolerance for parents that ignore their children in public places ! Whether it is in a restaurant or cruise ship. The parents should understand that inconsiderate behavior reflects on them also. Teenagers running up and down the hallways and being obnoxious to the other guests should not be brushed aside. It is NOT our responsibility to being the adults of their family. That position should have already been filled by the parents. We understand that they may feel the need to get away from the daily pressures and vacation plans require them bringing children, but if the roles were reversed; would they tolerate being inconvenienced and disrespected? I don't expect so.

Yeah some of the kids can be and yes are a nuisance at times because of the parents are failing to accept their responsibilities for their offspring but the greater nuisances is those adults failing to drink responsibly and leaving a trail back their cabin.

You really went digging for this one ctav. Yep this one has come up on here many a time. It is a shame because most parents are responsible and do supervise their kids or at least make use of the ship programs when they take a break. It is the few irresponsible ones that ruin it for the many and paint all kids in a negative light.

On our last cruise we were on the tender coming back from Great Stirrup Cay to the ship and as we pulled along side the ship there was a toddler no more that 3 standing on a chair hanging over the rail of an 8th deck balcony just above the boarding area. As soon as we were off the tender we flagged down the security officer and reported this.

I have never been on a cruise this will be my first on June 23rd. But I have traveled quite a bit and my parents never let me walk alone I usually was with them or my older sister(she's 3 years older.) Trust me if I see kids running around free on this cruise I'll let the crew know. I just would hate to hear something happened to him/her and I saw them running around or that their parents are looking for them.

Interesting that the same topics were of concern 6 years ago (long before I joined) as crop up now.Wink

Yes, I completely agree with you.

The problem is parents who take a vacation WITH their children, use the time to take one FROM their children .
I think the best advice yet is the comparison of a Cruise Ship to a CITY. If you ask a parent, "would you leave little Timmy (lets say, age 7) alone in NYC? Okay, then it might not be a good idea to leave him walking alone on a cruise ship. Considering the size of ships, the thought of young children walking alone is a real scary one. I have seen this more and more over the past 10 years. It is unfortunate. I agree, there are wonderful benefits of a good travel agent!
soozenw..you are not a paranoid mom! It's the world these days! you absolutely do not know who is on that ship with you! Mine are 6 and 9 and there isn't a minute that I am not aware where they are. The kids clubs are great especially with the supervised activities and my kids LOVE them but I'm on a family vacation. So all in moderation you will see my kids at dinner with me! This is also where it is important to know the difference between the ships and cruise lines you are sailing on. That is the benefit of having a good travel agent!
