Seamans Book

Hi

My daughter is working as a Dancer on the Sun Princess and is currently working Cruises in Australia, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. She has a Visa for Australia but no requirements for a Visa for the other Countries (She's a British Citizen and UK Passport Holder). In 2 weeks they are sailing to South Africa via Singapore, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Zanzibar and Madagascar. She has been told on board that she cannot go ashore in South Africa without a Seamans Book (or card). She is not in possession of one of these and they can be time consuming to obtain (she needs to apply in person).

Does anyone know if this is correct as I understand a Seamans Card is to go ashore at a port if no Visa for that country is held. British Citizens do not require a Visa for visits of less than 90 days so I see no reason why she needs a Seamans Book? She has never been asked to have a Seamans Book in the past when working Cruises in Europe, Caribbean and Russia.

Any information gratefully received!

I have tried to read the complete instructions on the Seamans book which provides the options of getting the visa facilities of different countries. I have tried to find out some useful written information on the https://top5writingservices.com/edubirdie-com-reviews/ page which provides the quick edubirdie review option of any writing service content which can be used by many people while doing any kind of writing work.

Wow .. It is unfortunate but this is not the first case of ships being turned away. This happens when there are scared people that do not know better running ports and positions of responsibility.

Another update regards Coronavirus - the Sun Princess called at all South African Ports and everyone disembarked. However some passengers and crew had rocks thrown at them when disembarking at Reunion on Sunday 02/03 - although eventually riot Police calmed the protesters who were not happy about possible Virus being passed on to Reunion Island. This despite no cases on board and the last Port visited where anyone could have been infected was Phuket on 01/02 so over a month. Bad news today also as the Ship was refused at Mauritius 03/03 and is now headed back to Fremantle. Some of the Crew who didn't have Seamans Books / Cards for South Africa will have been on board without disembarking for over 3 weeks when they arrive in Fremantle on 10/03.

Thank you for keeping us up to date with this. I have wondered how things are going, especially with the virus out break!Happy

Well my daughters ship berthed in Richards Bay in South Africa yesterday and all members of Crew with any form of Seamans Card or Seamans Discharge Book were interviewed by Immigration and she was allowed to Disembark. So all's well that ends well and all the stress of not knowing whether she would be allowed to disembark has gone! As an aside no-one was allowed ashore in Madagascar a couple of days before as the ship had been to Singapore around 13 days before and due to the Covid-19 outbreak the Madagascar Authorities refused entry to anyone on the ship. This despite the ship docking and everyone Disembarking in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Seychelles and Zanzibar in between Singapore and Madagascar.

Thanks for the update, and glad it seems to be working out ok. all too often we don't get "the end of the story".

The ship docked in Singapore and she managed to pick the Seamans Card up. There didn't seem to be any problem regarding the Virus and they are now en route to Seychelles after visiting Phuket and Sri Lanka. I'll up date if there are any problems or indeed if the Seamans Card is not required to enter South Africa. It looks like another of the Princess ships is under quarantine though in Yokohama, Japan (Diamond Princess).

I hope she is able to get it. With many of the cruise lines cancelling cruises from Chinese ports she may not make the stop at Singapore. I wonder if she can make alternative pick up arrangements.

Good luck.

Well my daughter managed to apply for the Seamans Card and it was delivered on Saturday to her friends father in the Netherlands. So he's going to hand carry it to Singapore when he flies out tomorrow and hand it over to her when the ship docks there on Thursday 30 January.

She couldn't have picked a worse time to send the application - last thing on Friday afternoon (just before closing) on Tasmania (a small Island off a Big Island!). So the application probably sat in the Post Office all weekend and arrived in Melbourne on Monday and arrived UK Thursday. The Maritime Agency processed and issued Thursday Afternoon and it arrived in Netherlands Saturday Morning.

Now I wait to see if they ask for it when she enters South Africa!

Oh good grief. In an ever changing world, its comforting to know that some things NEVER change. The bureaucrats are an international species that will never become endangered.
