Princess Internet

Hi folks,

My husband and I are sailing on Ruby Princess in December. It's our first time sailing Princess. Anyone here have experience with Princess Internet? I've heard it totally sucks, so I'm going in with low expectations. Tell me the good, bad, and ugly. Haha How about their Internet packages? I've heard rumors that two people can share the single package as long as they take turns using the Internet. Princess tells me we have to buy an individual Internet package for each of us. I wanted to ask around before spending the extra money.

Thanks!

My wife and I had the plus package on our Alaskan cruise last year on the Majestic. Starlink was good and stable, and I never seemed to have any issues connecting, but I only connected when I wanted to get updates or do a Wi-Fi call with our daughter. We will be on another cruise next April with the Regal Princess and once again have the plus package ... fingers are crossed we'll have an equally good Wi-Fi experience.

Princess' internet service is comparable to most lines using satellite tech, slow to bearable to not functional. Nothing to rely on for mission critical service, but better than nothing. You will be able to "share" 1 paid access, but not at the same time. You can only have 1 "device" active per paid subscription, but you can have multiple devices. So you can use your phone, then shut down/logoff, then connect with your table or computer, logoff then then your husband can connect using his device. Newer ships and those that may have undergone a recent refresh MAY have Starlink satellite for the ship, which will increase your speed slightly but drastically make your service better, as Starlink isn't dependant on a single satellite fix. The one thing you probably won't be able to do is stream. INet browsing, email and Inet phone calls will almost always work, but S L O W is the word to keep in mind. We've been on 61 various cruises so far and have both a trans atlantic and another trans canal coming up in the next 3 months. The first on Regent, which is supposed to have Starlink. The latter on Princess, with fingers crossed she will have Starlink. YMMV

We were on Regal Princess in the British Isles August 24-September 5. Our package included a Wi-Fi package. That meant 1 device per person per cabin. I had my IPad and my husband had his phone connected. Even though they give you instructions on how to connect when you board we still had to go to the service desk and have them do it for us. Not as simple as it sounds. It took our friends next door about 9 days into the cruise before anyone at the service desk could get their phones to stay connected. For the most part once you got connected it was fine. I wish Princess would have an IT help desk like Celebrity does.

They ALL basically suck, but that doesn't keep virtually everybody from raising prices...even STARLINK is glitchy...There was a time when the cell would wind up in the safe for a week...now, you're "forced" to use it just to access things around the ship...and frankly, sometimes thats glitchy too....could it be fixed...of course....ranks right up there with the wretched TV channels...but thats another endless thread.....

Excellent question, without a complete answer. I used the Princess internet but since I was by myself, I only used it to access the onboard Princess 'programs' and check up on my account. I DID NOT try to communicate with anyone back home, nor, try to do business transactions, nor, try to watch episodes of The Love Boat on my phone. I have heard pros and cons from folks trying those activities - mostly negative [except select episodes of 'The Love Boat' should be on your cabin TV -- no need for a small phone screen].Love

Regarding sharing one phone, nice thought. I (obviously) did not try that option. I see Princess offers a single phone option, or up to four (not sure if a 2-phone package is offered). Supposedly, the multiple option is to easily contact another member of your group when one is at the Spa, and the other is in the casino -- er -- library.

Final thoughts. Initially, the internet program was not very good/reliable. I hear the more recent experiences are much more positive (similar to Medallion - there were growing pains initially). Whatever your internet needs are, I hope Princess is able to give you a pleasurable experience. Keep researching. SOMEBODY has the perfect answer for you. Best wishes, and happy cruising.

We were on the Royal.

In order to touch base on occasion with each other and family we bought a bit of a package to go along with the Medallion thingy.

Then, when the time was convenient---- we turned off the devices...... and enjoyed the VaCa..

turned them on the get occasional update.Happy

It is not reliable! Our friends found that if they used it first thing in the morning, they were more likely to keep service long enough to complete whatever they needed to do. We only tried to use it a few times (it was included in our booking package) then gave up even trying. Keep those low expectations and you'll be fine.Surprised
