Medallion program - The negative aspect of tracking you

Princess is the first line of the Carnival Corp to roll out the medallion program.

every staff member that serves you will know everything about you. If you are British or Australian and do not pay gratuities (as is customary) will there be a black mark on your file that every crew member will know about?

Will that affect the level of service you will recieve or even worse put you on the virtual "SPIT LIST" ?

The information that is accessible from the medallion (except for location) is the same information that is accessible by your cruise card.

If you pull your tips, you can rest assured that everyone on deck 0 and below has already discussed you.

Hi baklabending! Quoting from your profile: “i cruise alot and never ever tip”. I get along with pretty much everyone, but if there was a master copy of the “spit list” I’d probably put you on it… Sad

YAY Pink.

I hadn't realized they were having so many problems. Thanks for the feedback. Time will tell if they get everything squared away.

Whether you detest it or await it, I wouldn't be concerned over the "Ocean Medallion" program for a while. Sounds like Princess is having gigantic teething problems with implementing it. Not that all introductions of technological innovations don't have their share of quirks, but from the sounds of this they overestimated its practicality big time, perhaps Princess and even Carnival Corp. will shelve the entire effort. For instance, here are current excerpts from guests on board the Regal, where they are trying out Medallions:

" None of our group had it. It is only in a few cabins. It is by muster station. We did talk to some of the people who were in the cabins that had the OM. Most were not pleased with it. One family of 3 only one of them could open the door to their cabin with their OM. One man told me he had turned his in the second day, because it was a pain in the butt. Everyone with the OM was also given a cruise card because most of the time it did not work. It did not work in the shops or bars. Sometimes it worked in the casino, but for the most part it is not up and running like they had hoped it would be. The good thing is the internet is great very fast. If you are elite you will get free internet for the entire cruise. We did not book the cruise because of the OM so we could have cared less. We really cruise to get away from all that but I know some can't live without it. I talked to the captain's circle person she told me not to expect to see it on other ships anytime soon. The roll out was supposed to be on 3 ships this year. They have pushed this back. I am not sure they are even saying when it will be ship wide on the Regal yet. I personally wish they would upgrade the TV on all the ships first. I would enjoy that more than the OM."

"The people I spoke with that had the OM were in Muster station A. I also heard they were all located at the front of the ship not sure which decks they were on. From things we heard from some of the staff they did not believe the OM would be ship wide for a while. It seems this technology is a lot harder to get up and running on a moving ship than they thought it would be."

I'm not quite "Double Dog" yet.... but I am enjoying the perks of being a new Diamond level passenger.Wink

If you're that worried about the "Spit List", you must lose a lot of sleep at night.

Profiling is done in so many place now a days it would keep you from every sleeping again. Your mobile device is being track in every department store, grocery store to locate what isle, section you're shopping in.

I haven't had to use this medallion yet and if I have the option of not using it, I'll opt out. I'll opt out because I don't wear jewelry other than a watch.

It is all about the profiling. All the better to market to you and "give you what you want". On the down side yes they will have more info on you. As it is now staff already have a list of those that pre pay gratuities and those that cancel. So the lesson is if using the medallion ... be nice ;)

I work for an airline and I was surprised by how much information I can get for any passenger. I'm sure the cruise lines are no different, whether you use Medallion or not. It's just how it is in the 21 Century.

It is like an old news article years ago where somebody had a slip and fall in the market. At the trial the market said they were drunk and pulled up all the booze purchased on the club card tracking.

Big brother is everywhere.
