Left behind on a Cruise...

Hi Everyone,

Have you ever been on a cruise and someone got left behind? How did that make you feel? Was the person(s) found or do you know if they made it back?

Closest we've been was in Costa Maya. However, we were on a cruise organized excursion, so there was no legitimate risk of being left behind.

Yep ... it is unfortunate ... but it does happen

Well........don't know if the "comments" section is included, but the overwhelming majority feel they should have been left..fwiw, the comments section of this site that accompanies their news articles can get a bit wild....seems the "chuckling" rankled some folks, caught on the recording...but I'll bet real money lots of folks who stand at the rails watching the pier runners are doing EXACTLY the same thing.

Oops sorry wrong thread.

Thanks everyone for the prayers, we are definitely going to need it here on our beautiful island.

I had an ocean view cabin on my first cruise which was next to one of the doors that was used for the gangway. It was only used once, I believe in Victoria, my wife and I were entertained by looking out the window watching the pier runners.

Definitely see tons of runners. Watched a husband and wife get left behind after running down the pier. I actually video taped it. The wife was livid and the guy gave himself a DeNozo slap on his forehead. (Reference Ncis). It was rather amusing.

I gotta tell ya....there have been some epic stories in here over the years...but as far as I'm concerned THAT takes First Prize on my all time list. I actually read it 2x....I just don't know how THAT could be topped......You and her could sit at our table any time.....and tell that.......heysoos.......

Yeah, I was 'that guy'. Hilariously funny story, but not so much for me. I had taken my new girlfriend (who would eventually become my wife) on her first cruise and which was our first real trip together. We had flown in to Puerto Rico from Miami and sailed to St Thomas USVI) that evening. Beforehand I had explained to her that I had a very personal thing I had do do that day on the island of Virgin Gorda (BVI's), so she was staying on the ship and I would do my thing. So I got off and took the ferry first to Saint John and then another to Virgin Gorda. Cleared British customs and made the hour walk down to the Baths. By then it was 2:30PM and the ship was leaving at 5. Hopped the ferry back to Saint John where I hit the first hurdle....... the US Customs agent from H*LL! She was a rather large Black lady and totally having a bad day. As I handed over my Passport, she began her questions. Why had I only spent a couple of hours outside the US? Why did I have no luggage. What was the purpose of my trip? And on and on. I was directed to another office where both she and another agent spent the next 90 minutes grilling me, eventually leading to a strip search. They thought I was carrying drugs. When the ordeal finally ended it was almost 4PM. I barely caught the last shuttle boat back to Red Hook. In rush hour traffic, I caught a cab and made it to the Cruise dock. It was now 5:00. Running, I made it to the ship......... only to see it was about 12" clear of the dock. The access door was still open, but the crew in the doorway refused to let me jump onboard. But that wasn't the worst thing. The upper verandah deck was full of people looking down at my plight..... and laughing their a**es off. I watched in vein as the ship pulled away yelling 'wait for me'! Eventually I was put in contact with the ships land manager, who helped me by getting a dive shop boat to take me out to the ocean where my ship was, and when the harbor pilot got off, the crew allowed me to get back on. The degradation continued however, as they made me get into a full harness attached to a rope before climbing the single step onto the ship. Then, the First officer dressed me down for violating the rule of not being back on time, along with the threat that "the captain" might have further issues with me. OK, now I'm soaked with sweat and tired and completely humiliated, but I'm back onboard. I get back to the cabin......... and my girlfriend is nowhere to be found. So I begin the search...... and after walking 5 or 6 decks, I finally find her, sitting in a bar with 2 very good looking guys on either side of her. In addition, she's been drinking all afternoon (the guys were "helping her" drown her sorrow), thinking I "abandoned her"! It took a good hour to calm her down and explain. But my time in H*LL wasn't over. That night, as we walked into the main dining room, I received a standing ovation by about 50 people, as "that's the guy who missed the boat"! For the rest of the cruise, people would come up or pass by and snicker.... ...... and yes, we managed to survive that terrible episode. Needless to say, on the over 60 cruises we've been on since, we've NEVER missed the boat. The moral of this story? Don't be 'that guy (or girl)'.

We left passengers who had taken a non-ship shore excursion in Ketchikan. We watched as the tour company rep tried to negotiate with ship personnel and then would get on his cell phone, then back to the ship personnel, we watched the back and forth until sailing time not all aboard time. Then the the gangway was pulled and we set sell. Rumor was 11 left behind. (No bus or van or any runners showed up while we were still in view of the dock. We felt really badly for them, unlikely they would be able to catch up for Victoria, assume they likely had to return to Seattle. We were docked next to a Disney Ship in St Thomas and saw a family almost miss the ship, We heard the ships announcements calling names for quite a while. “Anyone in cabin xxx please call guest services”. This happened a number of times. Some suitcases were set on the dock and an envelope or folder handed to an official on the dock, gangway was pulled and the ropes were starting to be removed. A golf cart came speeding up the dock with 2 adults and 2 young children, the crew saw them coming and put the suitcases back on the ship through one of those doors that creates a platform when opened and that is where the family boarded also. Lucky Family, everyone watching from our ship cheered as the family got on.
