Is Asia Really Heating Up as a Cruise Destination?

Asia is supposed to be a big hot destination for cruising but is it? Recently, Costa has cut back on its commitment to Asia and is concentrating more on Europe. It joins Carnival, Princess and RCCL i cutting back on cruising in Asia. Here's a link to more information. Perhaps the Asian market is oversupplied.

I still have lots of ships leaving from the east coast of the states and the gulf states and most are within a days drive at my accessibility and spending 10k for an Asia cruise isnt really a smart move on my part.

On Expedia.ca, Delta Airlines Toronto - Narita $1544CAD return. Next March 16 which is the time we are looking at.

Same date, Vancouver - Narita, Eva Airlines (very good airline) $1117 CAD return. One stop.

These rates are per person return.

Those are small air fields. Maybe if I get a 172 and convince the California 940th Air Refueling wing to air refuel me every 3 hours until the 203rd Hawaiian Air Refueling wing gets me to Asia....

We also fly the cheapest we can. My son is fortunate to fly Business Class because his company pays for it. We would live to visit Asia, but the flights are way too pricey for us. I hope the forum members who have found such reasonably priced flights from Vancouver, will tell us the dates they are looking at. I’ve checked out a variety of dates and days of the week on a few different sites and cannot find rates anywhere near ehat they quote.

I knew there would be confusion not knowing that "DGF" wasnt an Airport identifier. But I was basing the cost at per person flight and was just get from SWO (Southwest Ohio) to Asia which that person isnt.

However, business travel is different than pleasure traveling which I do both and that is for me, business traveling someone esle is covering the cost in the end and I do hunt for the lowest fare.

What dates are you using for the Vancouver flights? I checked a few and the cost was over $2000 CDN per person to fly Vancouver-Narita return. Perhaps you misread and what you saw was just one way .

By the way DGF means Dear GirlFriend, not an airport code in ctav’s post. He referred to “a flight for me and my DGF”

If you fly out of a small private regional Airport the rates are always higher. It is a private airport with only a 4600 foot runway a 1000 feet less than the minimum for a A320 and over 3000 feet less than the 737 requires. So why post DGF to Asia when it is not a commercial jet airport? The facts are simple from North America to major SE Asia Cruise ports is not $4600 USD cheapest, not even average. For $4600 I can fly Business class from the cities shown below to Canada or the Untied States.

Vancouver 325 km away the rates are in line with what I and others have said.

Cheap flights from Vancouver to Narita (tokyo) from C$665.31 | Expedia.ca

Cheap flights from Vancouver to Singapore from C$624.01 | Expedia.ca

$476.78 + Flights from Vancouver (YVR) to Singapore (SIN) on Orbitz ...

Cheap flights Vancouver to Taipei from $513 | Jetcost

$414.90 + Flights from Vancouver (YVR) to Beijing (BJS) on Orbitz.com

Can fly round trip for $1000 to 1200 dollars.

Just a quick search on line at several airlines and a flight for me and my DGF to Asia before parking, seats, luggage and shuttle services is over $4600.00 USD (cheapest) and I cruise in a suite bringing the cost close to 10k for me.

Do not think an Asian cruise is in my future but one must never say nevr.

We have taken several cruises in Asia on Celebrity including Vietnam and Philippines, then Singapore to Hong Kong, India and Dubai. Last December we cruised on Quantum of the Seas out of Shanghai. This cruise had more than 90% mainland Chinese passengers.

Next spring we are cruising from Singapore to Hong Kong, visiting Vietnam and Thailand. From Hong Kong we are flying to Siem Rap to visit Angkor Wat and other temples. We enjoy travelling in Asia and have never paid more than $1200 CAD for flights in economy. This compares quite favourably with the $700-900 we pay to travel to Europe, which is a much shorter flight. We have travelled extensively in Europe and are now looking for more exotic destinations while we are still able to take long flights.
