Four ships will be leaving Holland America's fleet

Holland America Line has just announced four of their ships that will be leaving the fleet this year. We're not surprised about Maasdam but we were definitely taken by surprise that THREE more will be leaving, too. I feel so sad but I understand that business is business and this is such a hard time for the industry right now.

Saw that earlier today and when you look at the age and size of those it was not a surprise. Those were under 1500 passengers and in this market that is small. Also you need to consider that HAL is the target of a lot of lawsuits right now and those ships are going to take some major work to be ready for post covid cruising.

NCL Spirit on the other hand was built in 1999 and holds ~2000 passengers and they just paid a lot of $$$ to completely revamp it. Also NCL recently secured a bunch of new financial backing and they also have managed to fly under the legal fallout radar from covid.

Too old, too small, and so on and so forth. Why am I thinking NCL SPIRIT? Probably meaningless to anyone who hasn't sailed on a "smaller" ship, back in the day....Sad indeed. but at least they aren't being turned into razorblades quite yet....

We knew that many ships would be leaving, this is the first of the falling dominoes. It’s sad that this is necessary for the line to survive.

And two sovereign class ships will be sold off by RCL. Monarch and Sovereign of the seas. Both classics!
