FIRE DRILLS ON SHIPS TODAY

Years ago All Passengers had to attend in person with Life jackets on @ their Muster Stations which is posted on the back of your cabin doors.

Passengers fell on their Life jacket straps & the Coast Guard allowed appearances in person with OUT it.

Once everyone was counted & marked they attended Passengers were released to enjoy their Cruise.

Then ... and NOW you must watch the instruction video in your cabin & make an appearance to your Muster Station to mark your attendance then go about your 🛳 Cruise. I say FABULOUS 👌

NICE TO BE INFORMED & SAFE NOW LET'S GET THE SAIL AWAY 🥳 PARTY STARTED !

I Like this change very much. It has been this way in 2022 on Celebrity, Holland America, Virgin Voyages & Princess.

What do you think?

I personally like the new way too. I've been on so many cruises, I now know the entire Muster Drill speech by heart. For me, when we had the old way, I was like "Just tell me where I need plant myself so that we can get to the fun faster!"

That said, I can see the value of having to go to the in-person drill for the new cruisers, who may not know what to do in an emergency.

Theres a couple more as well, but you've hit it on the head. The majority of the individuals on a cruise ship would be unlikely to survive the jump from the lifeboat decks, let alone navigate tilted, possibly smoke filled hallways

Agreed

Excellent post but you're spitting in the wind. Don't BS me, you're just doing it to bust chops...I opined long ago, (seems like this topic keeps coming back hehehe) that the only ones who "might" stand a chance are combat veterans (with the accompanying bad attitude) and NAVY types who were trained for ship emergencies, albeit in another life....

I agree Coasterking 👍 💯 The drill no longer demonstrates what to do in case of a Fire. Just demonstrates where your Muster Station is.

Absolutely no practicality.

All the Ships I have been on are doing the same. I have been on six last year and six more forth coming this year.

Thanks for your comments.

The muster is a laugh. There are other things beside a fire on a ship. Look at Costa Condordia, the ship is on its side. I laugh at the life jacket doner demonstraitors, they dont tell you how to jump over the side with the jacket on, they assume you are going to get in the life boat, if your side hasnt lost theirs due to listing, and I ask the crew standing at the steps to direct you to your muster dining room what happens when the ships lists port or starboard how are you going to handle the stairs, the stairs will be the walls. They look surprised. I ask them if there was an actually abandon ship drill on any cruise line where all passengers actually get in the lifeboats to see how long and if the drill actually works. No answer. I ask if women and children go first, how can you tell who is male or female? No answer. I ask how the walkers and scooter people abandon ship, one said crew will help, asked how would get them off a listing ship, no answer. I said the in port drill how come I see no one maning the life boat stations, no answer. All they do is guide you to the stairs to the muster station (ours is main dining room) I was in the Navy and we did an actual abandon ship, all of us jumped over the side, of course we had no elevators or stairs, just ladders. I will jump over the side with my wife when the ship lists as half of life boats will be gone, muster can go to davy jones locker. All it takes a major disaster at sea to take muster seriously, hopefully as much as I like to cruise, I will not be on that one. all ships I have been on I ask the same questions, get the same look

Well said.

Technology is not always the Best Way to Teach. Practically is where I'm coming from also. I agree and never thought about the fact this method allows passengers to return to Eat & Drink $$ Faster and Not help them with the safety ment for this Fire Drill 🔥

Thank you helping me see your view.

The so-called new way is a waste of time.it accomplished nothing except get you back to drinking or eating a bit faster. It was an insult to the intelligence of anyone who could ever imagine the result of an actual shipwide emergency. So now were back to figuring devious ways and means to get people to show up, ontime!

Yes Aunt Punkie what you mentioned is true. I have no children so never thought about attention span vs actual proformance at a LIVE FIRE DRILL.

I saw it as the new modern way of Today's Education. And the use of Videos & Electronic Devices was cool.

But I do think Fire is our Biggest Enemy on the Sea. Hands on is probably more appropriate to instill the Danger of Fire on Board.

I'm sure you have plenty of cute photos of Family members in Life Jackets to remember "Those Days" 😆

Thanks for the comment 👍
