We are considering a family cruise out of New Orleans, about half of the family members have cruised before. We will be flying in from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Fresno meeting at the airport. We were thinking of spend a night in town before the cruise and then two or three nights after the cruise. How easy is it to navigate this port? Does anyone know if most of the hotels have shuttles to the port? Any recommendations as to where we should stay, we were thinking the French Quarters. I've cruised from Long Beach, San Pedro, Miami and Fort Lauderdale just wondering about New Orleans any tips will be great. Thanks

Cruising out of New Orleans

Thank you all for your help.
Looks like you have already gotten several idea on where to stay and how to get there. Enjoy your cruise. Yes, stay in the French Quarter.
The Quality Inn on Westbank (Gretna) has a shuttle to the cruise port and the Hampton Inn offers transportation to the port too, according to their website. I’m not sure of any others.
Thank you maryred for the info, I think they have narrowed down staying in the French Quarters, so we might just do the shuttle. There will be 10 maybe 12 of us.
Thanks again this was very helpful
No in the city hotels or B&Bs have a shuttle they will call you a cab if you ask or tell you to wait for the airport shuttle to come around. Cabs start at about $18 per couple and increase from that by a few dollars for each additional passenger to a max of 5 but luggage may lower that passenger count if it doesn't all fit in the hatchback. The airport shuttle is $18 per person and limits you to 2 pieces of luggage plus a lap bag.
There are several outside of the city limits hotels and motels offer a free shuttle to port with their snooze-n-cruise packages. But the trade off is you could pay up to $36 for the first 2 people plus a few more for each additional passenger (max occupancy 5) to get a cab into NOLA to go sightseeing.
