Carnival Freedom fire

The Carnival Freedom had the whale tail catch fire again. This time probably by lightening.

Carnival Ship Funnel Catches Fire After Possible Lightning Strike (cruisehive.com)

I am really surprised that the Whale Tail was made of anything but metal? What on Earth would cause a Engineer to create a smoke stack from something that would burn? I realize the ships are all licensed in some other country but come on Carnival...was this fiberglass really? We all know that Soot Buildup can be a cause of fire and there is some Water Washing or Chemical Cleaning they do for maintenance to remedy these situations should they happen. That bit about Guys Burgers was a bit too funny, but right about now I am wondering too?

I am sure there Insurance Carrier knows what caused it and the premiums just went uppppp!

I have no doubt that those fine folks are very well trained, and drilled on the suppression operations.

However my idea of Fire control, goes along the lines of Clint Eastwood's alleged idea of gun control:

"I have a very strict gun(Fire) control policy. If there's a gun(Fire) around, I want to be in control of it"

Its difficult, as ive spent the last 20 years training to, and taming "the Beast" To sit there, with my proverbial thumb in my posterior, is difficult.

I'm reasonably sure theres a handful of crew who know EXACTLY what to do in case of a fire or other emergency...and I don't mean your "well-meaning" steward, waiter or fav bartender...most of whom are only just a hair more able to deal with a real emergency than the average passenger. THOSE types aren't trained to be nice and customer friendly...but they do move TOWARD the problem, instead of away....and I'm sure YOU know EXACTLY the type....as for everybody else, I give certain first responders and military types who have actually "seen the elephant" as the saying goes a big edge on plain ol survival...

Fire is one of the worst enemies for seafarers. Hearing a "Bravo" Call onboard a ship really gets me pretty wound up. Mostly, because they wont let me help Big Smile

….and now the Key Bridge in Baltimore. Fortunately it was a container ship that hit the bridge and all of the crew are accounted for. They were able to stop most of the traffic because of a “mayday” call. It wasn’t “rush hour” traffic. No one on the ship was hurt. The sad news is that at least 6 people are unaccounted for from the construction crew filling pot holes on the bridge. The bad news for the cruise industry is that the port is closed. Hasn’t been a good week for the seagoing.

Also heard about flooding on the Carnival Sunrise. I haven’t researched that yet.

This is so sad. I’m glad no one was hurt on the Freedom. I understand one of the crew was treated for smoke inhalation. The Holland incident is actually worse, but not as visible.

Adding this to the HAL explosion, I'd hate to be one of the Carnival Corporation executives who's job is to negotiate premiums, coverage and deductibles with their insurance carriers.

I'd hate to be ANYTHING even vaguely related to the decision-making mahogany row types at CCL...their track record is somewhat less than exemplary....but.....time marches on...

I always thought those funnels were constructed of sheet metal. After viewing the photos, it looks more like a fiberglass or some other composite (i.e. plastic) material. It's curious that this has happened TWICE to this particular ship. Just bad luck I guess, unless they're routing the exhaust from the fryers at Guy's Burgers through the funnels. The grease build-up from that could burn as hot as the sun.

That was minor compared to THIS. Folks forget they are on a ship at sea, and things, sometimes bad things, can happen.. This incident is something you could see in a movie...only this was r/l, sorry to say.
