Review summary

This was not a typical cruise. There were more sea days than most cruises, and even in summer the weather was cold most of the time. But it was a fabulous experience, with incredible scenery and animal views. Great way to see a remote part of the world. Ship was older but well maintained, with plenty of activities and excellent entertainment.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
The usual wait to sign in, but the line moved reasonably fast.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Service was efficient and friendly. The food was OK to good. A good variety to choose from.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Didn’t take advantage of a lot of the activities, but there were plenty of offerings, including trivia and other games.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The shows were all excellent. I was especially impressed with the variety shows in the theater every night. Outstanding!

Children's Programs

No kids with me.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service across the board was friendly and efficient.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The Star is an older ship, and that’s obvious in spite of some upgrades in recent years. The common areas, including hallways, were cleaned daily. There was a respiratory ailment circulating on the ship. I was one of those who caught it. It was airborne, so the staff wasn’t able to eradicate it.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Inside cabin on deck 10. Small but efficiently organized. Especially liked the shower, which was larger than most cruise ship showers and had a sliding glass door — safer than the usual curtain.

Ship tip

Be sure to check out the excellent entertainment!

We flew in the day before and spent the night in a waterfront hotel. Lots of deals, pelicans and other creatures along the coast. Otherwise, we didn’t see much to do there.

Historic sail through pretty scenery. Saw a lot of seals sunning themselves on ricks during our shore excursion.

Ushuaia, Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina

5 out of 5
Pretty city set amid gorgeous mountain scenery.

Cruise Cape Horn Did not visit port

Weather too rough. We took a different route and went straight to the Falklands.

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

5 out of 5
Loved the large population of penguins and the friendly people!

Puerto Madryn, Argentina Did not visit port

Ship had mechanical problems and we were hours late leaving the Falklands. So the captain ditched this port.

Montevideo, Uruguay

Nice city tour with plenty to see. Pretty beaches, though we only saw them at a distance.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

5 out of 5
Nice city tour, plus a visit to an estancia (ranch) with herding and riding demos by the gauchos (cowboys) and a tasty lunch with delicious beef and chicken.

Disembarkation

Relatively easy. We were catching a city tour, so we were among the first to get off.
