Packing for cruise

When do you start packing for your cruise? Do you over pack?

We have cruise boxes that keep all our stuff together. It reduces the time required to find things to put in the suitcases.

It depends on the trip, for a one month Europe trip I start a week before, Tux, a couple of vest and tie sets, Studs and cuff links, the rest jeans and shirts. I try and under pack and just buy anything I may need along the way. When I go to Italy I way under pack so I can go shopping in Italy and wear what I buy on the trip (European clothing just fit better). For a 3 to 7 night cruise I pack the day before, shorts and t-shirts for the Caribbean islands. If I pack to early I keep thinking of more things to add and then I over pack.

I pick out more than the clothes I'll need on a cruies. I organize them in a guest bed according to casual daywear, evening wear and formal. The I subtract what doesn't match anything else or is too similar. I then start to pack about 5 or so days ahead of time depending on the length of cruise. I make a list of what goes into the suitcase. Then I print out my saved list of incidentals and check off those items as I pack them. Hopefully I will have everything that I need. Then I just relax and enjoy the time before the cruise starts knowing I am ready. My husband is a lot quicker than I am. Gloria

The waiting for the night before to pack seems to be a "man thing". LMBO!
I always over pack and I try to get it done at least two weeks before we leave. My love waits until the night before which causes great anxiety for me and of course he thinks its hilarious and forgets things.
I'm looking around for packing tips and lists and found your forum. You people are brave only packing the night before! :) If I do this, I inevitably leave out critical things that I then regret and/or pay through the nose to replace! happyatsea, I love your idea of packing on hangers! Seems like this would take up extra space, but it would certainly help me visualize what I'm bringing (which is always too much!) Thanks for the packing list. I find these so helpful, but reading forums and lists has really helped me make a very complete (I hope!) list of things to bring! Here are a few other sites with great lists that I used: Here's the Disney list. Not specifically for a cruise, but really useful: www.mousesavers.com/wp-content/uploads/UltimatePackingList.doc Another site with 10 cruise packing lists by topic with tons of great ideas I wrote down: http://www.cheapestcruise.info/packing-lists/packing-list-for-health-items/ Finally, CruiseDiva rules! She's thought of many useful things: http://www.cruisediva.com/pack_it.htm May you all pack well and light! :)
Wow... I suddenly feel like a very disorganized packer! If my trip is less than four or five days, I pack all my clothes the night before. If I started packing five days in advance I would probably run out of clothes to wear that week. Other supplies I start accumulating a few days in advance.
Thank you for the hyperlink PolinaM! Very helpful as my husband and I are fist time cruisers, going to Bermuda in June....YAY!!!
after 20 cruises I have a system. I prepare outfits on hangers a few days before. Once we board the ship I open the suitcases, remove the chunky hangers the ship provides (our cabin steward will store them) and hang our clothes. We have 2 extra outfits per person just in case. The hanger system seems to keep us from overpacking like we did on our first cruise. LOL
I begin to choose or buy my clothes a couple weeks in advance. I lay them out on a bed in the extra bedroom. When I feel I have all I want I think about it for a couple days, then cut down on the amount I want to pack. I will load up the suitcase two or three days before the flight out. Then weigh it, and make final adjustments the night before.
