Cruise to Panama on m/s Zuiderdam

Sail Date: January 01, 2010

Reviewed: 7 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Inside

We have cruised several times on other cruise lines so this was our first time with Holland America. Since it was supposed to be "a step above" some of the others, we were looking for a little bit better experience. We did have a great cruise, but did not find that it was any better or worse than other cruises. The stateroom was a little larger, but that could have been just the ship and can't speak to all of the Holland America ships. Also, there were a few more minor mistakes than on the other ships we have sailed (i.e. our cabin was missed a couple time when daily newsletters were delivered and we had to ask for it, there was no bottled water in our room when we sailed, etc.). We did feel, however, that the evening shows were excellent and having chats sessions during the cruise with the people in the shows was interesting. The food was excellent and we liked the fact that the same foods were served in the buffet (plus more) as in the dining room so that if you chose the buffet on formal nights you didn't feel like you were missing something.

Pros: Excellent variety of evening shows

Cons: Daily activities were repetitive after 4 days at sea

Recommends Zuiderdam? Yes!

Evening entertainment was excellent but daily activities were the same as other cruises and repetitive after four days at sea. Having to "dress" for evening activities was okay since you had to "dress" for the dining room, but if you used the buffet that still meant changing clothes from casual. I think casual would be okay for the evening entertainment since you are sitting in the dark anyway.
Ship Quality
Everything was kept clean and we were lucky to have a room that made it easy to access the floor where most things were without having to take elevators. The decor was a little loud, but that is personal taste.
Food and Dining
We liked the option of being able to go to dine at the time we chose through the open seating. Three formal nights on a ten day cruise were too many for our preference.
Cabin / Stateroom
The location of our stateroom was good, but there were several minor mistakes that we didn't have on other cruises.
