The ship was lovely--emphasis on was. It really took a beating since 2002 when it was commissioned. Too many items were worn out. Still, it had a nice traditional sense about it.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
The food ranged from amazing to average. Hits were lobster, lamb shanks, salmon and prime rib. Not so good tenderloin and rack of lamb. Often not hot enough which could make entrees seem less than wonderful.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
Good dance classes, fun bingo and better than average shows. Excellent acrobats, musicians, and talent. We felt sorry for the Zuiderdam dancers/singers. They had talent but really strange conglomerations of songs and general goofiness. Reminded us of OLD Broadway musicals. Shows need an update to showcase the talent. Male lead singer excellent.
Children's Programs
3 out of 5
Kids seemed well entertained--at least kept out of the way! They were fairly well behaved with one or two exceptions--and then it was clear that the apples didn't...
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Parker, the cruise director, worked hard, although he seemed perilously close to bored with his own schtick. The guy in the Piano bar was downright cynical--a shame because very talented. Otherwise, the staff was really, really helpful and friendly.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
Really clean. Lots of emphasis on using Purell--good idea! Gaudy for Holland America, I thought. Cocktail lounges were surprisingly small. Several times we skipped drinks because there was no place--anywhere--to sit.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
In spite of a rather pathetic couch and deck furniture that was worn, the bed and great sheets as well as a terrific bath/shower made up for it. Cleaned well--except carpeting was a bit wanting. Room steward named Rusdi did a great job. Unfortunately, he pointed that out daily. :-) Still, he was as good as any we've had.
Pros: New Year's Eve party, ports of call, great bed, cleanliness
Cons: Worn out feeling, not enough bars, small atrium
