Review summary

The Zuiderdam is beautifully constructed and decorated. The brass was shiny and polished; the wood was spotless; the carpets were lovely; everything was clean and well-stocked. We enjoyed the antique decor and the artwork, both of which were abundant. Everything necessary for the passengers' pleasure (dining, shopping, entertainment, etc.) was easily located and accessible. We were glad that we chose Holland America and the Zuiderdam when we discovered that this line has more docking rights and access to areas (inside Glacier Bay, for example) than some of the other lines. The itinerary was wonderful; we so appreciated the "hold our position" that the ship did during the cruise of Glacier Bay-it allowed us to snap the pictures of a lifetime when the glacier was calving.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The quality was outstanding and there were many more entree options at dinner than expected. Our dining stewards made us feel right at home-it was like leaving old friends when we had to go! By the way, when you sail on the Zuiderdam, DO NOT MISS the bread pudding!

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We only attended one show and we completely enjoyed it. It made us sorry that we missed the others. The meetings were informative and we liked the fact that they were also broadcast on the ship's information channel in case we missed something.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
HOW do they remember all of our names like they do? What a great group of employees-Holland America has to be extremely proud. I wish I had co-workers like these.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Everything was well-marked and convenient. Plenty of elevators and stairways were available.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin stewards keep up with everything so well that we never wanted for anything at all. At first we wondered if the balcony stateroom would be worth the extra expense...the answer is an unqualified YES-we're glad we chose it.

Pros: The incredibly friendly and personable staff.

Cons: Having to disembark the ship. We wanted to stay...
