Review summary

It was the experience of a lifetime. Everything you would want and expect. First class from A to Z. I also think the Romantic Danube covers a wonderful stretch of Europe that everyone would appreciate. It's breath taking. I would do Viking again in a heartbeat.

Embarkation

Wonderful. The cruise folks take care of everything from the minute you come to the ship. And in my case, my luggage was lost at the Budapest airport and for nearly 48 hrs. they owld not deliver it to my hotel. The airport in inefficent and no one answers phones or is helpful. Once I got to Viking, they took care of EVERYTHING and got it delivered to my cabin personally before we set sail.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food is nothing short of a five star restaurant. All meals were scrumptious and you can have as much as you want and individualized as much as you'd like. You have a choice of eating on the terrace or in the dining room. Whatever suits your mood with the same menu and exceptional service. The buffets are fabulous and I'd enjoy even a few more to have out to go along with dining service. The drinks are also top rate. You won't ever go hungry and your palate will be spoiled.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
They had a trivia night and a musical masters night. Games you played in groups. My sister and I had a ball. And it looked like all those who participated did also. The main reason was program director Paul Lau was unbelievable. He made every group activity fun and enjoyable. You WANTED to play.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
I wasn't too interested. I much preferred relaxing on deck as we sailed, or resting comfortably in our rooms or on the veranda. Not that what I heard was not good or quality, but it wasn't must be there for me.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
OMG - never have I seen such personal service. They take care of everything. I mean everything. They are pleasant and happy and learn your names and individual needs. They bend over backwards to give you anything you want. I wish I could have tipped them all, everyone, extravagantly. They deserve it. You don't have to worry about a thing. My luggage was unfortunately delayed at the Budapest airport, and when the room steward found that out he offered to dry clean all my clothes free of charge and brought me a toothbrush and tooth paste. All the waiters and bartenders were 11 on a scale of 10. If Viking does anything right, and they do a lot, they hire the best people I have ever dealt with.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Immaculate. Lovely. Lay out flowed beautifully. Was functional but aesthetic. Classy but comfortable. Perfect. You never feel cramped or crowded. It's cozy. I could have stayed for 10 more days and been content.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Perfect. You never feel cramped. And we had two twins. Plenty of movement. Lots of space underneath the bed for your suitcase. And ours were LARGE. Bathroom was luxurious. First class in every aspect.

Ship tip

State rooms are worth the upgrade

Ports of call

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is striking at night. Being docked there is perfect to catch the entire effect. I didn't do the excursion because my luggage was lost and needed my walking shoes. But there wasn't enough time I think to have enough excursions. something set up maybe for Fishermans bastion or on the Buda side of the river.

Vienna, Austria

Loved it. Vienna is a must. so cultured and beautiful I did the Panoramic Vienna tour and behind the Lippizan stable tour. Both were good. And the Lippizaner tour is highly underrated. Every guide we had in every port was exceptional.

Krems, Austria

LOVED IT! Hidden gem. Gottwieg Abbey was maybe my favorite excursion. Breathtaking. Guide was so wonderful. The entire place was awe inspiring. I could have stayed longer exploring Krems. It's a highlight.

Passau, Germany

Salzburg. Brilliant excursion. One you shouldn't miss. It's worth the money. Salzburg was my favorite one along with Gottwieg.

Regensburg, Germany

OMG another home run! Loved the walking tour but the city itself is another crown jewel. Could have/would have liked to spend two days there. Enjoyed going out on my own to walk the stone bridge, hit up the sausage shop, Drubba's. Incredible town. Guide was another A+. I'd have liked to have visited more places like dungeons in buildings etc ., had I more time. I want to go back and do Krems again.

Disembarkation

Like everything else on Viking, they take care of everything and are so oraganized. They provide whatever you need and what time is conducive for you. Arranging your travel to the airport, a taxi, to the train station. Viking did not dissapoint.
