Review summary

If you want a relaxing and classic cruise experience, without all the frantic action of a mega ship, this is the cruise for you. Love Holland and it's classic ships.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was well organized and went smoothly.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food was good in both Lido and main dining room. Our waiter seemed overwhelmed. He was very good, but I got the impression his assistant was new. Maybe too many tables per waiter?

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
A traditional ship without all the new bells and whistles like zip lines and climbing walls. This line caters to a more mature crowd, and I appreciated that after recently being on a RCCL Oasis class ship which was crazy.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The cruise director Hannah, was very professional. The entertainment, a troupe of singers and dancers, put on 4 excellent shows on our 11 day cruise. It was refreshing to have traditional entertainment, singing and dancing, over some of the bizarre shows I have seen on other cruise lines.

Children's Programs

We brought no children, and very few were on this cruise, during school time.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The room stewards couldn't do enough from us. The cruise director was the best I have seen in a long time. The captain was gracious and very capable.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Even though the ship is 20 years old, it is beautifully maintained. Very easy to get around, except for deck 7 which has the kitchen in the middle, so you can't go through.

Cabin / Stateroom

Ship tip

If you want a classic ship, without all the craziness of the new mega ships, the Veendam is it.

We really like HAL also. We just came back from our 11 day Canada/New England on Zuiderdam.
