Generally, formal nights are on sea days but never the day you sail or the day before disembarking. Last year our Alaska run aboard the Ruby had a formal night the first full day at sea, a "dress to impress" smart casual night the day we sailed into Glacier Bay (everyone was encouraged to wear white & gold), and a formal night the first sea day after Prince Rupert.
