Review summary

We loved cruising and would cruise again in a heartbeat! The Royal Princess experience was a cut above other cruises we've taken. We loved traveling on the "Love Boat" and especially enjoyed the ship's horns playing the Love Boat theme song as we departed port. Room service was TOP OF THE LINE!!!

Embarkation

There were long delays an no porters. It was AWFUL.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Some buffet lines were closed at times, leaving limited options. Most main dining room food and service was great; however, once I was served shellfish which was not ordered and to which I am EXTREMELY allergic. Thankfully, my wife caught it before I tasted the shellfish. Crown Grill was EXCELLENT--both in service and food. Sabatini's food was good; however, we were not happy with seating arrangements. It was the occasion of our 50th Anniversary and we'd requested private dining. We were seated by a chatty couple--and the waiter chatted and stood over us throughout almost the entire meal. We never had a minute to ourselves. I believed seating was chosen because it was by a window and had a wonderful view; however, there were other more private window seats available.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
It was too cold and windy for most activities on the deck. However, we enjoy the games, trivia, karaoke, Pop Choir, etc.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The shows were EXCELLENT. We especially enjoyed Encore, the magician/singer/comedian, pianist (wish he had performed more than once). One of the highlights was The Voice of the Ocean! We loved the coaches and enjoyed their banter.

Children's Programs

We had no children traveling with us and saw very few children or young people on the ship.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our room stewart, Simon, was EXCELLENT. He and exceeded our every need and expectation. He was very flexible and worked around our schedules in and out of our stateroom. Simon also recognized our Anniversary with LOTS of chocolate treats. Armando and Allistar were great leaders and made a special presentation on our anniversary day by sharing my wife's card she had submitted. This was followed by the delivery of roses for our anniversary.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship is beautiful and well designed. We never felt crowded except at times in the elevators.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The stateroom was excellent. It would have been helpful to have USB charging stations in the room.

Ship tip

Pack lighter than you think you should. Arrive at port early.

Ports of call

San Francisco, California

It was very cold and rainy. We were accosted by a homeless person on the way to dinner. We did not have time for an excursion, but enjoyed Pier 39.

Lahaina, Maui

Beautiful! We did the Atlantis Submarine excursion. We felt it was a waste of money. Visibility was very poor and the design of the submarine made it very uncomfortable to view the ocean via the portholes. However, the day was saved on the boat ride to the submarine. We saw whales!

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

We did not do an excursion; however, we rented a convertible and drove to one of the black sand beaches. That was a GREAT day!!

Honolulu, Oahu

We did the Palidrive excursion. We were able to see some beautiful sights; however, we really weren't that happy with the excursion. The driver was interesting and informative; however, he drove too fast. It was hard to see and almost impossible to take pictures. We did Pearl Harbor on our own via standby at the USS Arizona. We were unable to get tickets for an excursion and were ecstatic to have been able to visit the Arizona memorial. It was a very moving experience. We also did the Germaine's Luau. It was delicious, entertaining, and FUN!

Ensenada, Mexico

The stop was too short and activities were limited. We shopped for souvenirs and went back to the ship.

Disembarkation

Disembarkation was very orderly and quick.
