Royal Princess

5 Night Cabo San Lucas Getaway (Los Angeles Roundtrip)

Sail date: February 01, 2020

Ship: Royal Princess

Traveled as: Singles/Friends

Review summary

this is a unique cruise in that the ship overnights at port and I like that. I think you would like it as well. You are not going to get there in time to go fishing even though locals will try to sell you on a trip. Do take one of the small boats down to the tip. It's lots of fun and very scenic. Remember, traveling due south from the tip of Baja the first land point is Antarctica. Cabo was first inhabited in the 1500 by pirates and there must be buried treasure in those hills somewhere..You'll be able to see why no one has yet found it.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
fastest embarkation ever from the aux Princess Terminal in San Pedro California

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The Early dining room, the Concerto, was really nice. The service friendly and very well done, plus the other diners seemed to be people who took cruising seriously and were very nicely dressed..I wasn't but that's another story...it was a very nice atmosphere. The Buffet was a disappointment for me. For some unknown reason the designers of the Royal Princess decided to do the buffet differently than any other ship I have ever been on. The Buffet is lined up across the ship and I'm not sure how many lines there were but I was always in the wrong one. I would sit down with a stewed tomato and see people walking around with oysters on the half shell. That's the way it went for every meal. I'm probably to blame as I'm a glutton and never seem to realize that there might be something better around the corner.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
I'm calling the onboard excellent because even though I didn't participate, I enjoyed watching them. The Atrium on the Royal is large and many of the excercise/dance classes were held there. It was a lot of fun to watch from the decks above and it was evident that everyone..viewers and participants alike were having a really good time. These events were led by very energetic pleasing people...all cruise directors in training I'm sure.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
I usually am not all that impressed with the onboard entertainment, but two of the shows were of such high standard that five stars is well deserved. The singer and dancers ....I don't know what to say...just super!

Children's Programs

I generally try to pick cruises with Zero children aboard..does that explain why this was not applicable..kidding;)

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
It would be very disappointing to go on a cruise and not get excellent service and on this cruise there were no disappointing moments at all..very nice service everywhere.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
I titled this "The Good the Bad and the Ugly...here is where the Bad and the Ugly come's in The Buffet design is the bad..and the fact that there is no Promenade deck is the UGLY. I've read reviews from people who feel this is not important but...They are wrong and I am right..;). Walking on the Promenade (Francais for walking) at sea..day or night..is one of the things that I truly wish everyone could experience at least once in their life. I could go on and on..but you get the idea..I really missed it on this voyage.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Typical small balcony cabin, but perfectly adequate. I like the large closet and the shower on this ship is larger than some of the others and has a wand. That's a big deal with the person I travel with. I don't really care..I just like the really hot, high pressure water. Cabin still has the desk with a chair but the tub chair has been missing on my last couple of cruises and I miss it. The flat screen TV is great and so is the programming. Lot's of current movies and a lots of other things to watch. Josh Garcia's travel logs are fun..I hope they get more. I have seen them all. I have to say..that you will end up with a stiff neck if you try to watch TV from anyplace but bed. That is a compromise..it is what it is

Ship tip

The elevators are small..just get on no matter how unhappy the faces are when the door opens..if not you could be in for a long wait

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

5 out of 5
I think they do a great job at this port. Parking is easy but pricey. There are hotels nearby that will deliver and pick up with free parking after a overnight stay..check around

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

5 out of 5
I've been traveling to Baja California since the early 1960's. It is greatly changed but always fun! If your cabin is on the left side of the ship you will have a great view of the tip of Baja and the beach that runs from the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. on the right side a nice view of the beaches and para sailing and other fun things. Think about eating at one of the outstanding restaurants on shore and returning to the ship at night. It's beautiful to say the least.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
fastest ever...just like the embarkation.

And conversely, we love the buffet lineup compared to the tight circles on ships like the Ruby, always make a fast run through all the lines to see what is being served is my motto. Agree with the loss of the promenade deck walkway, but that seems to be the trend on newer ships.
