Embarkation
1 out of 5
Horrible in a word -- Ship departure delayed due to weather -- ok, that happens...BUT it wasn't until nearly 4pm before we were advised that we could not board the ship until 9:30-11:30pm!
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
Average cuisine at best; the dining room service was wonderful but meals were served warm (not hot) and a two-course dinner should not take over two hours to complete!
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
The ship is tired and in dire need of a refurbishment.
Entertainment
1 out of 5
Only one singer could actually sing. The two comics were not funny.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
The service and the actual staff were extremely helpful with the exception of the Future Cruise Consultant Sara -- she couldn't be so bothered to assist us with a future cruise and the time she did spend with us (four clients) was riddled with rolling eyes and huffy sighs. We made a joke about it be really?
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
The ship is CLEAN. But again, in dire need of a total renovation.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
Size was fine and location was ok EXCEPT when loading or un-loading items as there were a set of double doors that opened to the dock and the noise level at those times was extremely high.
Ship tip
Don't sail on it -- pick another ship from Holland America until this one is renovated.
It's lovely to see a different part of Honduras BUT this port is no where near ready to accept over 1,000 passengers. Taxi service is difficult to find and when walking it's not the most scenic nor is there anything to see anyway. Taking a walk up a long pathway leads you to a town square with a church (ok, cute) but the balance of the town is certainly for locals only and not tourists.
Great place to visit BUT again, not much to see or do at the port -- a shop that welcomes you with open arms but if you want to see the actual town you must rent a car and driver -- which we (4 people) did at $25 per person in a van and were driven around and ended up at a "mall" for lunch. Again, the town and the local people were quite friendly but if it wants to be a major port in the Caribbean the town government needs to "up it's game" with shops that appeal to tourism.
Costa Maya is one of those places that you get off the ship and get free internet and a drink. The local government should do a complete overhaul -- it's been the exact same for many years.
