Review summary

We were so excited to set sail on our first ever cruise with a great social group we are affiliated with. We set sail out of Tampa, FL on 2/8. 24 hours into our trip my husband fractured his leg on the sports court. We were “treated” ( I use that term loosely because they just did an xray and splinted his leg) and were charged almost $1,200 for this. They “treated” us down in medical and sent us back up to our room for the night, we were then forced off the ship the next morning on 2/10 (19 hours after the accident) where we were taken by ambulance to the local Cozumel hospital and were told by the cruise line that the doctor had to clear us in order to get back on the ship. Long story short the doctor did not clear us to get back on the ship because my husband needed surgery on his leg. Royal Caribbean took it upon themselves to pack all of our belongings up without getting permission from us (this alone was very violating). We were stuck in Cozumel by ourselves with zero support from Royal Caribbean and we had to find transport back to the states in order for my husband to get surgery. We were stuck in Cozumel for 3 days prior to having to pay out of pocket for an air ambulance back to Tampa. Hard lesson learned from our end to ALWAYS buy travel insurance. But also shame on Royal Caribbean for zero support to their customers. I am now having to fight to get some money back since we only were on the ship for 2 days. Also side note the ship returned to port a full day before we were able to get back. My question is, how bad does an injury have to be for Royal to medivac someone off their ship. Thankfully my husband and I had the support of friends and family and were able to return to the states but I know there are people in this world that would have been stuck for much longer. Not sure I will ever cruise with Royal ever again

Thank you for sharing your cruise experience and resulting caution to have plans when the unexpected occurs. There is a lot of fine print and procedure that most of us never experience. All the best in your husband's healing.

Sounds like RC did everything right. Can you imagine how upset you would have been if RC did not give you your belongings before they left port.

Sorry that your husband was injured, but what do you expect from Royal Caribbean? Did you have travel insurance?

Sorry for your experience. And I hope your husband gets better. I do believe RC should owe you money for the days not on the ship. They could have done better with letting you know their plans and letting you pack. But blaming RC for everything is not right. Their medical services are very limited. And the response of sending you to Cozumel hospital is the right thing to do. You husband could of have had blood clots if he would have stay on the ship. Your story does have the positive effect about buying travel insurance. I hate spending the money but your story will help people.

You ask how bad a situation has to be before medivac...I would guess life threatening like stroke or heart attack and being too far away from a port

It is unfortunate that your husband injured himself on this cruise. Simple fact is he injured himself that’s not the responsibility of RC. You failed to get travel insurance so you are now paying the price and learned an expensive lesson. I hope you are not suggesting that RC should have evacuated him at sea? You would have to pay for that and I can only imagine what expense that would be. It’s standard procedure to pack up your things if you are not coming back on board. Also never travel without a passport. As for paying for medical treatment on a ship it is an expense travel insurance would reimburse you for.

You can’t really rate the ship since you were only on 1 day. So sorry that happened . How did it happen. ? You can’t really fault the ship for that? Definitely, if there is a next time buy insurance . We always do.

Hope your husband is doing better. This is a prime example of having medical/travel insurance AND a passport to easily return home. So many travelers go on short cruises with only a driver's license.

I’m so sorry that this happened to you both. Hope your husband is doing well now. Thank you for sharing.
