This was our second time on the Queen Mary II and I must say it was a bit more casual compared to 10 years ago. Some of the guests ignored recommendations about the dress code after 6 pm. But for the most part it is worth the cost to travel at least once on this magnificent ship. Great for group gatherings or special events. We loved the variety of bars but some of the service was not as I remembered. All in all, I would travel again this ship. Be prepared to pay NYC prices for wine and drinks!
Embarkation
4 out of 5
The embarkation was a bit long, over an hour. They stagger the arrival times but there is always a long line. Exceptions were made for those in wheelchairs and small children.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
We found the buffet to be noisy at peak times, but the caliber of food very good! A nice variety to choose from. No one will ever starve on the Queen Mary II. We did like the dining room for breakfast and lunches and found the dinners to have limited choices. Service can be a bit slow at dinner if you have a fixed seating time.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
We did not participate in too many activities. There is shuffle board, a golf net, game rooms, and a gym (at extra cost). The highlight is the Canyon Ranch Spa. It does cost per service but buy a day pass to the therapeutic pool/jacuzzi/saunas. So worth it! And then there's the Casino, need I say more?
Entertainment
3 out of 5
The staged shows are probably a C+ . Not quite ready for prime-time or Broadway.
Children's Programs
We had no children and did not explore any programs.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Mixed bag on service. Some of the waitstaff was exceptional and some of them need to go back to basics. The customer is always right.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
You could eat off the floors of any area of the ship!
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
We had one of the least expensive rooms available. No window and a compact size. However, the bed was a queen, the closet space was the same as those with balconies and it was ridiculously quiet. The bathroom was small but with amble storage. The 10th deck is comprised of balcony suites and high-end accommodations . We found the location to the elevator bank to be perfectly located to access the promenade deck, restaurants and bars. A win — all around!
Ship tip
Book early and you'll get a free upgrade. Book late and you'll get a great price but limited choice of accommodations. Try to find a room near the center elevator banks (B and C). And if you do book early, sign up for an early dinner seating (if it applies) and book your excursions at the same time. Oh, and pack less !
Loved the city! Modern, friendly and really beautiful. Take time to visit Peggy's Cove, although it was a short time at the Cove, we had time to explore the city and have lunch out.
Read our comment, the Queen Mary in Long Beach was the second ship to be given that name, built 3 years after the original QM was launched on the River Clyde
The original Queen Mary is in Long Beach, California as a floating hotel. Maybe you are thinking of the QE2 who is berthed in Dubai. The original Queen Elizabeth sister ship to Queen Mary was sunk in Hong Kong harbor after a fire.
Queen Mary 2! Queen Mary II is the original QM that sailed on the River Clyde in Scotland, built in 1933, launched as Queen Mary and became Queen Mary the second to allow the ocean liner Queen Mary to be given her name! The original is now moored in Glasgow and the QM2 has donated furnishings following her remastering
