Review summary

My family and I were excited to be visiting Hawai and it was beautiful. The Pride of America was somewhat disappointing however. The cabin was extremely small, and when we first gained access to our room a letter was on our bed. It said that due to a lack of staff that the room steward would only make up our room once a day. Normally this would not be a problem were this a hotel room. But in this tiny cabin, this meant that the hideaway bed and the convertible sofa would always be out, greatly decreasing the available cabin size. We had one extremely small lane of travel, and to get a view out of the balcony we had to be on the balcony since the other beds were in the way. When we went to Guest Services with this issue they asked us to contact the corporate office. When I did this after the cruise, the agent said there was no record of anyone speaking to Guest Services and they would give is $100 credit on a future cruise. The lack of staffing not only affected the cabin service but also dining. Several times we needed to wait for a table for an extended period despite the main dining room being little more than partially full. They simply did not have enough help to keep up with the diners. The wait time on food also was long. The cruise itself is very bare bones. Entertainment was some of the worst I’ve experienced on a cruise. Most days we went to sleep in our cabin before 9 because of the lack of activities.

Were you unable to put the sofa bed away yourselves?

Most cruise lines are down to 1 cabin service per day, NCL even sent emails out about this change across their fleet. Rooms on Pride of America are small, a simple google search before and this knowledge could have been gained. You say at the beginning of the review Hawaii was beautiful yet give the Ports of Call low ratings.

Sadly, the lines (for many reasons with one being financial) have reduced the staffing and doubled up in many of their taskings thus reducing the amount of personal service we see. Then to insult the paying passengers even more, I noticed that the so-called ’tips’ have been increasing. Effectively pay the workers less to make the bottom line look better to the stockholders, then increase the so-called ‘tip’ to make up some of the wages.

Most normal cabins may technically be able to sleep 4 people but won’t have plenty of room, something to make sure you research next time. Also you didn’t seem to enjoy Hawaii what was up there?

Did you pick your cabin? Most cruise lines have moved to one cleaning time per day. Thanks for sharing your experience.
