Review summary

We stayed in one of the Penthouse Suites with Large Balcony. We needed the space, but not necessarily the "Butler" service that comes along with it and we didn't really use the Butler. However, we still provided him with a decent tip at the end of the cruise. The ship is old, but well maintained and was kept clean. We saw only a few areas that needed improvement such as worn carpet on stairs, etc. The food was good and the ship's staff were generally very polite and helpful. The "Aloha Cafe" buffet area did get very crowded during the typical rush before and after port visits, etc. We visited the Skyline dining room one night and found the food was good, but the service seemed a little slow. The only complaint (only an irritation really) was when we tendered back to the ship in one of the ports, the ship decided to use the same tender to carry a large stack of beer back to the ship. As a result, we stood in line in the sun on the pier while half of the cases were loaded, then waited inside the hot enclosed tender while the remaining cases were loaded after the passengers were onboard. Overall, it was a good cruise and I recommend it.

Ship tip

Arrive in Honolulu the day before your departure and visit Pearl Harbor, the Arizona Memorial, etc. For several of the ports, consider renting a car and drive yourself, or do as I did and let someone else in the family do the driving. The major rental car companies had shuttle buses from the pier to the airport rental locations. I recommend taking snacks/drinks and maybe a pocket umbrella.

We arrived the day prior to departure and stayed at the Norwegian arranged Hilton at Waikiki. The hotel was good and in a convenient location. However, after working with NCL to reserve a suite with three separate sleeping areas/beds, they booked us into a room at the Hilton with only two tiny double beds. The Hilton CSR accommodated us to correct the error, but Norwegian dropped the ball and left us with an unacceptable room assignment. There were no clear signs or directions regarding checking in at the Hilton after NCL made the reservations. The lines were extremely long for guest check-in, so be prepared. Did I mention the Hilton check-in lines were extremely long? We left our bags in the hotel room at checkout and went to the Peal Harbor area to tour the memorials. Some of the bags arrived onboard before we did (after the embarkation process) and the last two bags were only an hour or so after we boarded.

We drove the "Road to Hana" in Maui. The trip was a bit tedious, but driving a rental car vs riding a tour bus allowed for as many side stops as we wanted. We stopped at numerous roadside overlooks, attractions, water falls, etc. Twin falls and many of the other roadside stops were nice. On the advice of an Uber driver, we skipped Garden of Eden, so no comments on that. If you drive the road to Hana, be prepared for a long day, wear shoes that will not slip on wet stones or in mud, and watch out for the numerous one-lane bridges where you'll stop to allow other drivers to cross first. Two of us went on the ship arranged excursion to rappel a waterfall (through Rappel Maui) and it was nice. The waterfall area was "private" for the tour only and was inside The Garden of Eden.

The Volcanoes National Park was closed during the visit. We rented a car for the day and went to see Rainbow Falls and stopped at Carlsmith Beach Park to see and swim with sea turtles. Stopped off in town to walk through some shops and flea market.

Kauai turned out to be a nice port visit. We rented a car for the drive to Wimea Canyon and stopped off at a beach afterward. The drive to the Canyon area and back took a few hours.
