Food and Dining

Shortly after eating breakfast in the Windjammer I became ill, started vomiting, with stomach cramps and diarrhea (having had food poisoning previously was aware of the symptons). Was carried to the medical section treated and carried back to my stateroom the next morning under quarantine. After two ports entirely and spending three days in the medical section .... Royal Caribbean called it a "slight inconvenience" and issued me a $ 240.00 credit to be used if I booked another cruise ..... for a problem that they created .... what an experience, one that I will never forget.

I realize there are always those people who think the rules don't apply to them and then when they get sick blame the cruise line. I was just pointing out that all lines have the stations not just NCL.

Watch and see the idiots that think they don't need to and then get ill and post these reviews.

All ships have sanitizer stations at the buffets and using it is mandatory

Sauspud—you are absolutely correct! I carry hand sanitizer and use it constantly! Especially after touching hand rails at the stairs. As a retired RN, I am very germ conscious and am forever washing my hands, also. There was even a hand washing station available on my last NCL ship as you entered the buffet restaurant.

This is why the hand sanitizers are so important. People board, don't use (or know why to use) and spread germs fast. The windjammer on boarding would be the worst place to first visit.

Just to avoid an argument here, depending on the pathogen, food poisoning symptoms can begin hours to days after ingestion. Viruses require isolation. If the medical staff couldn't differentiate, they side towards caution. Either way, it's not the fault of the Oasis. Sorry you had a miserable experience.

mmmcksm—I really think it was Norovirus and not good poisoning. They would not quarantine for food poisoning.

Odd that you don't say anyone else got sick. Usually if it was food poisoning there would be more than one cruiser affected

mmmcksm    7 years ago

And you could have had the virus when you boarded

funboomer47    7 years ago

Don't blame the ship. You had a virus.

Well, in my experience I have not had a patient with food poisoning that came on shortly after eating, it has always been something else.

mmmcksm——Yes, food poisoning DOES come on within a few hours of eating an affected food. But I have to wonder if this was the case, as the Dr put you on quarantine. You do not need to be quarantined for food poisoning, but you do for Norovirus. You would have severe cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea with Norovirus. You cannot expect compensation for contracting a virus. My daughter and her hubby BOTH contracted Norovirus while on a Carnival cruise for their honeymoon 10 years ago. They spent the first 2 days of their honeymoon in quarantine! Please don’t blame this on RCCL. It can happen on any cruise line. And although everyone associates Norovirus being an exclusive cruise ship virus, it is not. It happens everywhere that a large amount of people are together in a confined area. Very prevalent in nursing homes.

I work in medical profession food poisoning takes 2 to 3 days

Look at the bright side you probably lost some weight and it’s always hard to do during the holidays! On a serious note, sorry about your experience.

No prior cruises listed. Food poisoning usually does not come on that quickly.
