Review summary

This was our first cruise and I was very worried about the nickel and diming that could happen. Well, my worst fears realized. The very first person we met was the porter unloading cars. First thing she did was ask for tip to take our bags 15 feet. That pretty much set the tone for the trip. Be aware that if you don't do the prepay gratuity, they will charge per day per person $12.95. Watch your receipts when getting drinks or dinner, sometimes they already have in gratuity and still leave a blank line in case you want to add more. A rough estimate of what we spent on tips (including excursion drivers, guides, etc.) $500 for two. The ship is very nice and spacious. Rooms were nice but shower was small. Food was ok for lunch and breakfast (about same as what you would get at local buffet), dinner was really good. Service was always nice. Didn't realize until the cruise was almost over that you could really order more then just one main course, even get two of the same thing ... appetizer or main course. The Mexican place in the boardwalk had the best chips and salsa. Would have liked to try the other restaurants but didn't want to pay the extra fees. The ports of call were very third world and not impressive or great. I have no desire to go back to any of them. Labadee was nice but we found the beach to be very rocky and hard to walk on. Beware of the local vendors. My friends wife found out the hard way .. if they put anything on you they expect you to buy it. If you don't they get very disgruntled. It was unpleasant experience. The internet worked great and I didn't have any real problems connecting (yes, I actually did spend some time working). I was surprised by "Come fly with me". For being on a cruise ship that was quite a production and the high divers have some big .... Music on the pool deck was loud at times, found ourselves shouting at each other to talk. Like the different pool areas and they were constantly being cleaned. Overall the ship was impressive and nice.

The cabin was bigger then expected. FYI, if you travel with a group and your rooms are together. the panels between balconies can be opened up so you share (Just make sure your drapes are closed :) ). Shower is small but functional. Our room steward was very nice and always concerned with our satisfaction. I'd leave the room and be half way down the hall and appear out of nowhere and yell "hi" and ask if everything ok.

Ship tip

Book shows and dinner reservations before you go. Even if you don't go to the show, book anyway. they open it up 10 min before show.

when you book or so many days upto your cruise you can add it on. It is about $13 a day per person with Royal Caribbean. if you don't prepay it is added daily to your onboard account however we had a issue come up and didn't want to tip one due to major issues, ended up with 3 different waiters and wanted to pay those that did deserve it. so they refunded the daily fees and we paid cash to those we seen and did an adjustment with guest services for a waiter we didn't see at the end.

How do you prepay the tips? How is it calculated?

I am intrigued and surprised by all the comments. Understand that this is just my opinion and I'm sure you will read thousands of reviews from people who loved it. I, however, have just spent nearly the same amont (actually less) on a week in Amsterdam and Munich and found that to be a more enjoyable vacation. Will I take a cruise again? Sure. Will it be my next vacation? Unlikely.

The more I think about it, the female porter upon arrival unfortunately really did set a negative tone for me. Didn't even make eye contact while giving her speech and asking for money. I certainly got the feeling that if I didn't tip well my bag would be lost forever. Now I know.

Anyone know if the adult pool is covered or has access to the sun?

I guess I know going into a cruise vacation that everyone that serves you in some way shape or form gets tipped. from the Shuttle Drivers, Porters, Waiters, Cabin Stewards, Bartenders they all will look for tips. No you don't have to tip the Porter but, for a buck a bag it ensures your bag gets where it needs to be. I've had a person in our group not tip the porter and had to go claim her luggage when it didn't arrive in her room(oops the tag fell off). You learn all this after cruising a few times and just figure it all in for your budget.

Nothing about what a great vacation you get for the money. Cruising is by a long shot the best bang for you dollar. Just negative comments about tipping for services to make you vacation enjoyable.

we pre pay our tips and tip and extra $200 in cash for 5 days. we never have ever had an extra $500 in tip added.......but we are not heavy drinkers and buy very little while on board. sorry that tipping the porter set off a bad experience for you. why would you not expect to tip a bag porter?

Please also understand that most cruise staff are paid very little and gratuities are much of their wages.

Most of the ports use a union and they are not supposed to ask for a tip. If you offer one though that is fine.

Tipping is spelled out clearly online, and in guest ticket booklet pre pay or it is added daily. it also explains how this is broken down between waiter, room attendant, etc. If you feel a rate it not fare based on service you can add or lower (this is a cruise norm) For baggage this is not the cruise line but the port, just like at an airport. Shame on her for asking, I would have given her the tip is not to ask. otherwise it's worth a dollar a bag to help them get to me safetly. Tipping though is something that i feel, should be considered based on quality of service. sorry this affected your trip

didn't see the first part that it was your first cruise. which makes sense.

I assume this was your first cruise? Because what you described is what happens on every ship. The ships make more money with the extra's. But you learn how to get around most of it. it's like any upper crust vacation. Something when you stay at a resort. Nothing is ever usually free. Everyone has their hands out. IT is what it is but I ALWAYS have a fabulous time and still spend minimally unless I choose too.
