Review summary

We chose this NCL Getaway Ship cruise, 6/12/17 thru 6/21/17, Copenhagen, Warnemunde (Bering), Tallinn Estonia, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockhom, Copenhagen, as a vacation to celebrate our anniversary and a birthday.  We also booked land excursions for touring Bering and St. Petersburg.

It turned out to be a bad choice.

We had a serious problem in the morning of the second day when the ship got close to Warnemunde.  The sea channel leading to the pier is only 100 meters wide which is not much wider than this big ship.  The captain determined that the sea current was too strong in the channel and decided to circled outside of the channel, eventually for a day and a half (no joke), in order to wait for the sea current to slow down.  However there were other very large sea ferries sailing through the channel without problem.  By the time when the ship was able to dock, it's too late (didn't have enough time) for the Berlin tour.  Then it became even worse, because of the extra day wasted by circling out the sea channel, the captain had to skip Tallinn, Estonia, which is storied medieval town that we really wanted to visited.

The real problem is that NCL is knowingly picking (still does) this large ship for this itinerary, for the economy of scale.  But the ship is simply too big for entering Warnemunde during a relatively mild adverse condition.  Captain couldn't even skip Warnemunde, which could save the next port of call, Tallinn, because he had to pick up and to discharge passengers in Warnemunde.  The decision was made long ago by NCL management.  A small and equally comfortable ship will avoid the problem.

Thus we missed the visit of Berlin and Tallinn.  But this was not the end of the story.  The ship was advertised to dock in Stockholm in the city pier, so we could walk off the ship to begin the tour on our own.  NCL without providing any communication changed to dock in the coastal town call Nynashamn after we had made the reservation.   Nynashamn is more than a hour from Stockhom.  The traffic was always heavy.  It consumed more than 4 hours by waiting and riding the bus for the round trip, and it added additional cost to us.  The reason for the change, it was likely that the ship is too big the city pier.

Our vacation was basically ruined.  We contacted and complained to NCL.  The answer we got is that NCL has the right to make any changes because of its contract discretion.  But no cruise liners are permitted, under the so called contract discretion, for knowingly making decisions prior to sailing that would disadvantage their customers/passengers.

We just got done with our cruise with Getaway at Baltic Sea 6/21/17 to 6/30/17 and every port we went to was on schedule. We went from Copenhagen to warnemunde, Gdynia Poland, St. Petersburg, Tallinn Estonia, Stockholm and then back to Copenhagen. Overall, getaway is a great ship with water slide, hot tubs, pools, rope obstacle, mini golf, etc. The Berlin excursion was 12 hours and we are glad that we took the 3 hour AC bus ( thru viator) instead of train ( thru NCL) as I later found out the train did not have AC for the 80 degree F weather. Overall, the weather throughout the cruise was like 60 degree and so my kid only went on the pool once and we enjoyed the hot tub instead. We did not go on the water slide as it was cold. Food is great and plentiful but almost the same daily except if you go on the extra charge specialty restaurants. My only real complaint is the photo gallery package. These are expensive package and we added the photo book. We have to choose 35 photos for the photo book but the interface in the computer screen is slow, photos not organized well and it took us 3 hours to choose and order the photo book. By the end of this process, me n my wife was about to kill each other. There are number in the printed photo but not in photo in the computer screen. As there are a lot of similar photos, it is hard to tell the difference in the computer screen.

We did the maiden voyage for this itinerary in May. We made it to every port except Stockholm. We too, docked in Nynashamn. I heard rumors around the ship that Stockholm does not have docking facilities for a ship as large as the Getaway. I am thinking Nynashamn will consistently be the new port of call. The town is quaint but there isn't much to do and the transportation to Stockholm is not complementary. We were not overly disappointed as we were exhausted from Berlin, Tallinn and St Petersburg but for anyone booking this itinerary, with a heart set on Stockholm, factor this into your planning. That said, this was an amazing cruise and we had a great time and loved the Getaway. However, I do agree that a smaller ship needs to be used for this particular itinerary, solely based on the ports of call and docking facilities available.

GIL155----I've heard a lot of bad things from nearly everyone who has tried the Baltic itinerary. It's not the ship itself, but NCL trying to use a very large ship for ports unable to handle it. I cruised the Getaway and absolutely loved the ship, and am back on it in January in the Caribbean. I would bet that NCL puts a smaller ship in that itinerary for next year.

Sorry on so many accounts. If all true, NCL should be truely embarrassed.

The Captain has to make the decision whether to skip a port, or delay docking, for the safety of the ship and passengers. He doesn't make this decision lightly. And he certainly isn't trying to "ruin" your vacation. Perhaps this ship IS the wrong ship for a Baltic cruise, and they will not repeat its voyage there next year. Sorry you had such a miserable time, but this can happen on cruises. Itineraries change frequently.
