Review summary

FIrst off, we love NCL. Their bermuda trip is amazing.

The ship arrived late to port, so 12 of us, along with more than 4000 other people, sat in the cruise terminal in mind numbingly long lines and watched as all of the staff there took a break because there were too many people checked in. So we not only had to wait in line for nearly two hours, but most of that time was spent in line because there was nobody processing passengers. they just stood around at the desk waiting to be told to start again. Seriously? So much for setting a time beforehand, which we were there perfectly on time for.

The breakaway is a great ship, albeit a little big and with one major flaw - apparently it has rats! Our group of 12 had luggage chewed into and clothes ruined by rats on the last night of the cruise. Seriously. Rats got into luggage and took a dump all over the clothes and everything else in there.

The excursions were awful because NCL botched the tender process to get us from the boat to their private island, amongst other things.

We didn't get to choose a tender time for the private island because their system for reserving slots didn't work on our television. Typically you can reserve everything with a tv controller. On this cruise, none of that worked even though that was how we were instructed to make reservations.

The private island is small, too rocky and just genuinely terrible. The cost to use a simple inflatable is off the charts, not that there were any available.

After arriving on the island 1.5 hours later than our tender time, we found a little spot to put all of our bags and blankets and headed off to get lunch, because for some reason we didn't get onto the island til 1, even though things began 4 or more hours before.

What happened next though... We returned to our gear to find that the excursion staff had organized a tug of war. First with kids, and then with beef cake men with bad tattoos. Only problem, they did it directly over all of our stuff. When we returned, everything had been spilled, covered in inches of sand or completely buried. We are still missing things. Our bags had inches of sand in them. Ask yourself, what sort of person does this without regard for the items of 12 passengers?

Rewind to cape canaveral, a completely pointless destination. You can pay exorbitant sums of money to go to disney and spend 2 hours there if you like, but I definitely do not recommend it. We did the air boat tour which was nearly double what it would cost (we knew this going in) to get directly. It was alright, except we were late to arrive because the excursion staff is horrible. Then, our ride was cut in half because we had gotten there so late and there were so many tours trying to do the same thing. Part of that blame goes to the airboat place, most of it to NCL.

When we arrived in Nassau, we were sent out for our excursions at around 9:45. There was literally thousands of people out there on the pier and I could count the number of excursion staff on one hand. once I managed to find a staff member, I was given instructions to go to the wrong spot and wait. That staff member basically ruined the day. When we got to The Blue Lagoon, we noticed that everyone else on the boat had wrist bands. Not us. We never got checked into the excursion because the crew member screwed up. I then spent the better part of two hours trying to fix that while my family swam. Luckily Blue Lagoon is great and handled everything perfectly.

Otherwise the cruise was great until disembarking. Our friends had small kids and too much stuff. They were a group of 8. When an NCL staff member asked them f they wanted to go ahead in the line, because of the kids, they were quickly sent back into line because all 8 of them, traveling together, in one vehicle, expected to go. Once the security guy saw them, he sent them all to the back of the line. ??? So we disembarked in a matter of minutes, our friends took hours. Again, with actual disembarking times and everything. Whats the point of setting times? This was the case for the entire trip.

We did have great fun, believe it or not. But we wont go to Nassau nor on the breakaway ever again.

12836 is located 3 floors below and slightly forward of the garden cafe. It was very convenient. For some reason cigarette smoke found its way into the room any time we opened the sliding door. In canaveral you will dock facing the port. Fun on the balcony. In Nassau you'll be looking away from Nassau (which is quite nice to be honest) which let my family down, but I liked it. These rooms are really small. I am 6'2" and could barely fit on the bed. My feet were a solid foot off the end. There was also a strange and slow vibration from the ship that made sleeping a bit tough. It came right through pillows and everything. If the pillow was somehow touching the wall it was really bad. It shook your whole head. Not just a little, a lot.

Ship tip

Garden Cafe is where its at.

Thanks for sharing your cruise.

OK, the "rat" story is a bit over the top for me! I always take my own luggage off the ship once we return to New York City. I pack smart so that I don't need assistance with my bags. I also keep my bags locked and NEVER keep food exposed in my cabin. That will attract hungry vermin for sure! 👍😐

def not rats in the cabin. the cabins were just fine.

I wouldnt be surprised if the rats ran up and in via the boats ropes in nassau. the area around the port was particularly nasty.

All I can say with certainty is at some point rats ate into our friends luggage and pooped all over their stuff. It definitely didn't happen in the cabin.

I was wondering about Rats in the cabin...no rats were ever in my luggage when we put it out by the cabin door. Happy Cruising any way.

what I meant was that no one has previously mentioned rats or other things eating and leaving gifts in luggage on Cruise Critic, etc in the years I've been reading it.... you're the first review that I have ever seen mention it.

astrocortex    8 years ago

also RE: the comment about cruise critic etc, I haven't posted reviews anywhere else. It's not something I typically do, so even posting this one was an outlier. Which should also be an indication of how terrible the excursion end of things was.

Maybe I should post there? I feel like I've done my part though.

For clarification, 2/12 people had rats in their luggage. Presumably they got in there after the luggage was taken at 11pm. When they picked them up in the port, they found the problem. One might be able to point at the cruise terminal as the source, but I think given the time they spent there vs the bowels of the ship, it definitely points to the bowels of the ship. I have no idea if they filed any claims or anything. Presumably they did.‚

Also, we went to Bahamas, not Bermuda on this trip. I didn't want the review to sound as though NCL stinks, because like I said, we LOVE the Bermuda cruise and plan to do it again. In general, I do not recommend this trip. Bermuda is the perfect balance of ship/shore in my opinion. Nassau was mostly wasted time at ports due to the short amount of time there and the excursion crew screwing up so much. I apologize for any confusion.

On another cruise line I brought home fleas.  They were jumping out the suitcase and I had to go to the doctor because of bites.

Ejan    8 years ago

You were in the Bahamas, not Bermuda.

Ejan    8 years ago

Were you in Bermuda on a previous trip?  If not, then you were in the Bahamas.

esm54687    8 years ago

You imply that the luggage was in the bowels of the ship overnight (you did not say in cabin or hallway) but I have an observation.... You state ALL 12 in your group had rat issues yet you are the only review on Ship Mate or Cruise Critic to indicate there was a problem. This is weird because this type of event would've been all over the news and message boards. Did you take pictures and file insurance claims? How's that going?

deboftheseas    8 years ago

It was probably in the hold area where they keep all the luggage the last night of the cruise...plus you have to ask yourselves, what the hell was in their luggage.... Salami, cheese, what would have attracted the rasts to their luggage?

mskarla63    8 years ago

rats -where was your luggage at -please don't say in your cabin -for the exorbitant price one pays for a cruise --that is outrageous -perhaps some of that mandatory gratuity should go toward extensive pest control

esm54687    8 years ago

agreed fishface...... and God knows what other "passengers" make their way on board in the crates of fruit, veggies, etc.... Completely expected due to the nature of the travel (airplanes, 5 star hotels, your home, etc all have "guests" no matter the preventative measures)

Wow rats really on the breakaway

kochimuitepanchi    8 years ago

gross...I'm going to have nightmares

Wouldn't be the first time rats hitched a ride and a meal.... http://gawker.com/abandoned-cruise-ship-full-of-starving-rats-headed-for-1507439976

rats?!!! Are you kidding? I may jump in to the ocean if I see one😱 how bad is the rat problem?

deboftheseas    8 years ago

Enjoy your day...I don't think the rats were in their cabin..

deboftheseas    8 years ago

The rat thing probably happened overnight wherever they store the luggage down below, after you put it outside your room before midnight....in the bowels of the ship...steerage

enjoyurdaysmile    8 years ago

Did you put the luggage under the bed?

enjoyurdaysmile    8 years ago

That's awful about the rats and we were on that ship February 16-23, 2014. We always put our luggage in the closet standing up. I hope NCL got rid of them.

I was on the same ship and sailing.I walked off with my luggage thank god.I did not get off till Nassau I knew it would be a zoo trying to get on a tender.I did have a great trip and like Bermuda better.I was on the ship by noon and saw they made people wait to check in.All in all it was a great time.😎
