Review summary
Cruised on the Breakaway Oct 11-18, 2015. My second Norwegian cruise, in addition to 3 Princess, 2 RC, and 2 Celebrity cruises. I thought the ship was very nice and liked The Waterfront restaurants and bars. Entertainment was good, especially Burn the Floor, Howl at the Moon dueling pianos (lots of fun with talented pianists/drummer), and Broadway singer Donna Vivino. However, there were huge blocks of time (mostly on sea days) when there was very little to do of interest to me. Overall the staff was pleasant, but nowhere near the level of service I've experienced on other cruises. I didn't even see our room steward until day 4 of the cruise. There was no room service menu in our room and after calling for one, I was surprised that they didn't leave any breakfast order forms so had to call back for those. Most disappointing to me was the food in the complimentary dining rooms (Manhattan, Taste, and Savor). We had lunch there 4 times and dinner 5 of 7 nights. Lunch menus were uninspired and were repeated every other day. Dinner menus were more extensive but only one dinner was what I thought of as "very good". Not very much seafood, with the exception of salmon, salmon, salmon. No scallops or lobster at all. Another thing I found annoying about the dining rooms was that people were allowed to wear absolutely anything they wanted. Ripped short cut off jeans, offensive t-shirts, baseball and wool caps, etc. NCL's dress code says these things aren't permitted, but no one enforced them at all. We enjoyed Shanghai Noodle Bar and O'Sheehan's, but didn't like Wasabi at all and found the food terrible, service horribly slow (in a nearly empty restaurant), and the waitstaff were surly. The Garden Cafe buffet was good and had a little bit of everything you'd expect on a buffet. We had a drink package but were disappointed in the small variety of wines offered in the bars. Overall, it was nice to have the convenience of a NYC cruise departure and aspects of the cruise were very nice, but I don't think I'd recommend it to a friend.
