Review summary
This was our 5th cruise with NCL, and the first on the Breakaway. We have been on their smaller ships, on this same route, to Alaska and in the Med. This was a very disappointing cruise. The staff of this ship just didn't care about anything. The entertainment group did a fine job. The parties, bars, shows (dueling pianos were great), art, shops - they were all fine.
The problem was in the food service. Hot foods served cold, Cold foods served hot - even in the specialty dining areas. Wait staff reaching across the table rather than going around. Waiting 30 minutes to get an order placed. Poor food quality (what is "striploin"?).
Also, the design of the Breakaway is that most of the common areas such as specialty restaurants, casino, shops, art gallery are all "hallways". You are sitting down to eat and people are passing by your table less than 1 foot away. In the casino people constantly bumped pass you as they went fore/aft on the ship.
And, there was a lack of service. On the ropes course - no attendants on hand to help other than getting into harness - Can't imagine "walking the plank" and falling off - no one there to help you get back on.
I'd say the problem is mis-management, people just didn't care. Saw a lettuce leaf drop on the floor in the Manhattan Club - it stayed on the floor the whole meal - right in a walking area. Saw a person drop a cookie on the floor. The manager kicked it to the side rather than picking it up. That is an attitude problem that I never saw on any cruise ship.
