Fall Transatlantic Cruise

Sail Date: October 01, 2014

Reviewed: 2 years ago

Traveled As: Large Group

Room Type: Balcony

I thought this ship was easy to navigate\, very clean\, staff very friendly and helpful and the ports were interesting. Some of the entertainment was much better than others. It was large but not too large. The food is excellent\, the staterooms well-organized and all the bars and clubs have a smaller\, more intimate feel to them. The population of this ship is much older than some of the other ships\, so anyone looking for late night fun and wild times may not find it on this ship. However\, since the entertainment staff was young\, one could find something going on with that group in the clubs at night. Even if I was younger\, I would choose HAL for the quality for the cost.

Pros: Days at sea were perfect even though it was the first week in November\, the air was warm and sunny and seas extremely calm.

Cons: The cruise did not last long enough.

Recommends Nieuw Amsterdam? Yes!

Ship Quality
I believe the ship theater and other areas are going to be updated during dry dock\, so it should be sparkling in 2015.
Food and Dining
Excellent food and choices. I think HAL offers some of the best cruise food and dining options among different cruise lines.
Cabin / Stateroom
My one complaint was the sofa that was in the room that also was a fold out bed. It was such a negative it affected the overall comfort of the stateroom.
Service and Staff
Above and beyond staff. All HAL ships have excellent staff.
Entertainment
BB Kings Blues band was excellent with Vocalists April Rucker and Jason Waters.
Children's Programs
I choose good only because the few children on board seemed well-taken care of but I would choose another cruise brand for most children. This cruise is for older adults. There were several young children on the ship and at first we felt sorry for them but we noticed that the ship had provided several staff members to entertain them. This was especially important since we were on the ship for Halloween. I feel that maybe they got more attention because there were so few children on board. I would not bring teenagers on this ship. It seemed there is nothing for them--like other teenagers.
