Review summary

Overall, the New Amsterdam is an excellent addition to the HAL fleet. Compared with other HAL ships, it is maybe a little more modern (sterile is too strong) for my particular taste, but thus it answers to its New York theme. Although my husband and I prefer the Rotterdam, the New Amsterdam is larger, offers more in the way of entertainment and has in addition to the excellent Pinnacle Grill, the Tamarind Restaurant for Asian flavors, which is a delight. Like all HAL ships, the New Amsterdam has the great Promenade Deck where walking is a pleasure. With two pools (one salt water) this ship should offer much to all who are looking for a larger, but still intimate cruising experience.

We had all our dinners at the Pinnacle Grill and the Tamarind, which ar both exceptional restaurants. The food quality at the Lido (lunch) was good with plenty of healthy choices. We very much enjoyed the Le Cirque dinners and the Chef's dinner at the Pinnacle Grill. Congratulations to the Chef of the New Amsterdam.

Entertainment

The variety was a big plus. The Hal Cats were excellent. Enjoyed the Opera evening and the singers (made famous by the X Faxtor) from the UK

Uneven, but mostly friendly. It seemed there were more inexperienced staff on this particular cruise than we remember from other ships.

We stayed at a Superior Suite. Loved the comfortable bed, large balcony and lounge chairs, the jacuzzi bath, the spacious sitting area and the availability of the Neptune Lounge
