Review summary

Overall very fun despite the COVID protocols. 9 out of 10

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Los Angeles really needs to do something about the embarkation process. Royal has passengers select boarding times but, in my opinion, these were not respected. I booked a suite so had a little flexibility but I scheduled the earliest boarding time possible too. There’s no way the number of people that were in line also booked that time. It took 3 hours to get on board!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Loved the variety and staff especially. The food was excellent, although a little disappointed in the main ding room steak on night 1. We booked the dining package so went to all of the specialty restaurants. Loved Hooked, especially the raw bar. Chops and Jaime’s were great too. We felt especially spoiled at Chops. We had breakfast in Chops a few times which was a great option for suite guests. We also loved the buffet for breakfast and lunches. I was not impressed with Johnny Rockets, but I’m not a big burger fan anyway.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We always had something to do, the lines at the water slides weren’t usually bad and we could usually get in the hot tubs, find loungers, etc. This was probably because it wasn’t at capacity. I do wish the Solarium age was 18 rather than 16.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Loved all of the shows, comedians, juggler, magician, singers, lots of great variety acts. I was disappointed that we missed Showgirls. We heard one of the performers got injured. But I was not disappointed with ISkate!! A fantastic ice show! Great last show of the trip for my family.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
I can’t say enough good things about the staff. Especially dealing with Covid and all that brings. The staff was always friendly, courteous, respectful, and just made cruising fun.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Owners Suite 1630 was great! Very roomy, even for four of us. The balcony was great too, lots of seating and space to enjoy outside.

Ship tip

Check your itinerary and be flexible.

Disembarkation

Again, this is on the port of Los Angeles. Royal did a great job of getting us off the ship but to wait an hour to get through customs is a lot. I’m glad I didn’t have to catch a flight.

Appreciate the review. I've read several reviews on how unorganized the embarkment process is at that port. Good review!

Was on Navigator last month. I intentionally chose a later boarding time and was able to board immediately (after my Covid test). I agree, great cruise experience. Glad Royal is back in LA!
